Replacing 35 year old gas strove with electric. Apt amperage limit?

Print out the spec sheet for any stoves you are interested and consult an electrician. You might need a plumber to get rid of the gas line too (that thing sticking out of the wall).
I have a dual fuel stove. The oven has a self cleaning feature. We had a 220 outlet pit in. The electrician said that nowadays everything (stove, DW and fridge — has to be on its own circuit so you can cut power from the box without/before moving the appliance.

Our condo has a 125 amp limit according to the circuit box (as read by a homeowner who has only a basic knowledge of these things 🙂 ) Our 35 year old gas stove’s finickiness has finally crossed the line to where we feel we need to replace it soon. Unfortunately, our desires to switch to an electric stove and also keep this switch simple are not aligning.. We currently have our refrigerator and washer and dryer on 120 lines, and the rest of our appliances/power needs are minimal and typical. It’s easy enough to create a 240 line in the kitchen but how can we determine if our unit has the amperage to cover it? Doing an amps upgrade, bring power into the building from the street, is doable (has been done by other condos in this brownstone), but when compared to just getting a new gas stove (which we don’t want to do) it’s a huge expense and means we couldn’t get one until the electrical upgrade has taken place.

Has anyone else gone through this and found either th at they COULD add a 40 amp stove to a similarly wired apartment or that the upgrade wasn’t that big a deal? Or they gave up and stuck with gas? Thanks for any wisdom you can share 🙂

Only an electrician should answer this question. I can tell you that so long as you have the space in the box for a double pole (2 slots) breaker, you can probably do it. The other question that will come up is do you have the correct size wire coming from the street. An electrician can look at this and know. And let’s say you did not have the box space and decided to run a sub panel or get a 200 amp box, it is being said that con ed is in no rush to increase the wire size from the street. They seem to work under the assumption that you will not use everything at once anyway.

I called an electrician about some of this a few weeks back and responded to someone who wanted to added a 220 line to their garage for their car charger. Some of the same issues and i mention amperage and wire sizes if you wish to search back.

Its really for an electrician. I do some of this myself and added a 220 line in my parent’s house when i was still a teenager (without even asking the questions your are) to accommodate an arc welder and i have owned welders since but i would NEVER touch this in a customer’s home and it is not something to guess with.

It may be possible to reduce your total amperage if you skip the cooking range and install 2 pieces instead: counter top mounted cook top installed above built into cabinet wall oven. Also consider induction cook top instead of traditional electric heating element cook top. Work with a licensed electrician. I can refer one to you if needed

Cate, they need a dedicated line with “220 volt service”. 200 amp service refers to a main panel of that size and yes, that line will be a dedicated feed – but that is from the street.
