Would like to have one continuous countertop with cooktop and undermount sink but long wall dead ends at window…and space between back wall and window frame is just 20 inches…so countertop would extend 6 inches into window frame and window itself. Anyone have a creative solution for a kitchen with space issues like this? Thanks!

The counter surface itself can replace the current window stool if the height works out. And maybe “turn the corner” with an L shaped layout so that the sink is located under the window if some of the plumbing can be tweaked. That would give you that corner for additional storage. If it’s shorter (most likely situation) you can have a section with a dropped height and call it a “baking counter”. Depending on the layout of the remainder of the space not pictured, the fridge could go to the right of the window, the sink at the window, turn the corner with storage, and then have the range all the way to the left where the fridge is now. That would give you a luxurious amount of prep space.

Do you own? You could take a couple of inches out of the bottom of the window, that is, extend the wall up. An experienced carpenter and/or mason should be able to do this without making it look janky, and you wouldn’t lose a significant amount of light. I like the idea of extending the counter around so the sink is under the window is nice too.

i had to deal with this in a much tinier kitchen (4′ x 8′). It had a 2′ – 6″ wide window on the narrow dimension. Landmark distract, front of the building, so I didn’t mess with the window. Instead I lowered a tiny section of the base cabinet the same height as the sill – just enough so i could maneuver the window open and closed. I also didn’t run the wall cabinets all to way to the outside wall. I also opened up the micro-kitchen (originally a separate room with tiny door) to the living room, which allowed me to offset the cabinets forward to accommodate a dishwasher. This gave me a handy ledge at the back of each counter. Don’t know what’s goining on with the rest of your room, but for your kitchen, you might consider another bank of cabinets running parallel to existing cabinets and appliances to the right of the window. That way you could create a small work area at the height of the window sill and still accommodate all your appliances. Lowering the height of the sink to below the sill might work for someone short like me, but it would be way to low for many to comfortably use.

If I were to redo that kitchen I would. 1\. get a small stove 23″ and put that all the way to the right near the window. leave like a 2-3 inch gap between it and the window so you can get in there and clean. Put a few ikea metal shelves above that 2\. keep the fridge on the left then have a counter in the middle with the sink to the right near the stove I would not try to cut out part of the window sill or shape the counter to go around the sill. It will be difficult and most likely not look good in the end unless you go with an expert who really knows what he is doing.

The simple way is to just have the counter be whatever height it is, just stop it a number of inches before the window molding so it doesn’t interfere with your window sill, or opening your windows. If you have the space to make it stop even further from your window, say 9-12 inches, you could finish off that last foot with a counter and cabinet below that is not as deep as the sink cabinet, that comes out only as far as the window molding. It is nice to have little countertop space there to the side of the sink before the wall. If it is so narrow that you can’t put a cabinet under there, have just some open shelves, or a door in front of an open space where you can store larger items like platters. Another option is to have the dishwasher right next to the wall, instead of the sink cabinet, stop it a few inches before hitting the molding, and box it in with cabinet sides – it’ll look fine, and you’ll also also have a few inches of counter space (perhaps below a not fully deep counter, as suggested in the paragraph above) avove a narrow area for storage.

Much said on this, guess a challenge is hard to resist. So if I get this right, the “wants” are – continuous counter top, cooktop, under mount sink and a creative solution? I think “elbow” above mentioned an extra bank of cabinets. That would make this a Galley Kitchen and is one of my first thoughts. The “parallel row” i.e. the formation of the Galley Kitchen, could house a flush cooktop with the oven underneath. If the stove is centered with base cabinets on either side, and the countertop made to a 3 foot depth allowing for low stools on the back side, this would give you a ton of counter space. I’m not sure what that is to the right of the stove but, if the stove and that thing are gone, the wall side is wide open to center the sink with base cabinets and counter top on either side of the sink. As for the window, in the shallower space at the window, put a shallow pantry cabinet or wall of shelves. The counter top to the right of the sink would have a finished right end terminating at the pantry or shelves. …. I totally dont get the towel warmer thing above… stumped. .. I can draw this out for you and answer other questions you may have if that would help, you can find me at nyc-hs.com. Hope that helps! Matt R

Creating an L shaped counter that extended under the window would mean that you would be adding counter space to the right of the sink, which would have to be subtracted from the space to the left of the sink. To have any counter space at all in this arrangement, the stove would have to be smaller as would the sink. And still you would have no more counter space than there is now. If you have the budget, I agree with the suggestion of running another row of cabinets parallel to the existing row. This row of cabinets would start on the opposite side of the window, thus avoiding the window sill being lower than standard counter height. There are many advantages to this placement. As the kitchen exists now, the only storage is under and over the sink, which is not adequate. I would place the stove nearer to the window wall (on the side where the sink is now) to make venting to the outside as easy as possible. I would put a bit of counter space to the right of the stove. I’d put the dishwasher and sink in the center of the new row of cabinets. The refrigerator would stay where it is, but it needs to be a counter depth refrigerator so that it doesn’t extend into the door frame. With this arrangement, you won’t have to deal with the fact that the window is lower than current standard counter height. You’ll gain lots of storage and counter space. You will have created the desirable triangle placement of appliances.. stove, sink and refrigerator form a triangle for maximum efficiency. You could also create a bar counter on the dining/living room side of the new row of cabinets, add some stools and voila. Or, if you don’t want to see the faucet sticking up in the middle of the counter from the dining/living room, you could build a half wall that is higher than the microwave and divides the kitchen from the rest of the space. www.janeinteriorsnyc.com
