bathroom fan recommendation needed
we didn’t miss the point ed, she said that she has a contractor. they’re supposed to do things according to code. ps158 – there are no fans that are meant to vent into the ceiling. all you would do is create mold in your ceiling, a worse problem than you would have without a fan (where you could see/ clean mold inside the bathroom over time). 99 times out of 100 a 4 inch flex vent is run from the fan to the back of the house and a hole chiseled through the brick (or whatever you have). Sometimes through the roof but roof penetrations are not always advised if possible. if you went to home depot of lowes they carry all of this basic stuff. although you see the horrendous bathroom venting stories (or lack thereof) episode after episode of tv show ‘holmes on homes’, just make sure your contractor plans to do a vent. If not, it should be a strong clue to fire this contractor yesterday. oh, and make SURE they do not use duct tape anywhere on the job, it holds for about a year and comes apart (thus creating the mold-into-the-ceiling scenario). should be the paper backed foil tape at the very least.

Sexy time talk: can anyone recommend a decent mechanical fan for a bathroom. None of our bathrooms have windows, and since we’re gutting them, I want to do right from the get-go and make sure our contractor installs a good one. What’s the best bang for you buck out there? And I hate loud fans (who doesn’t?) Thanks!

i’ve used a few different exhaust fans over the years. i even have a few of the “better” ones made by panasonic and it’s very noisy. the best one i’ve bought is from home depot and it is made by a company that starts with an “N” – i can’t remember exactly. it’s so quiet that i forget to turn it off most of the time. on the home depot displays it shows the sound level.

fantech and panasonic in-line fans, if you can mount away from the bathroom etc (access in closet?) you can do dual pickups – one over toilet, one over bath or shower. and you can pick your favorite light fixture as you son’t have to have one drearily incorporated into the fan. not sure if you can tell that fan / light combo with built in motors are loud and depressing to me.

I’ve got some Broan heater/fan/light combos that we like. There’s no heat source in the bathrooms so the heater is fantastic to have in the winter and each component has a separate switch. The fan doesn’t seem too bad to me, and I think it’s quieter than the Panasonic whisper we had before. Also, I suggest getting a timer for the fan switch. You can some so that it goes off after the chosen time increment (5, 10, etc. minutes) so you can leave it on when you leave if you want to.

I have used Broan fans on many bathroom renovations. I always wire them with the lights, especially with rental apartments. If the fan is not turned on you will have mold on your ceiling in short time from hot showers. Having it wired with the light switch means it will always be turned on and turned off.

just because a light and fan are not integrated into one unit, does not mean they can’t be wired together on the same switch. I had two new Broan QTX with heaters and while they are not bad, the light they give off is inadequate (especially given how much bulb wattage i put up there) and it was an opportunity lost to make a great space better. I didn’t need the heaters. So i opted for two panasonic inline fans, and one bathroom got a funky chandelier and the other got a nelson bubble pendant. One bathroom had both a bath and separate shower so i split the pickup – one directly in the shower and one over toilet. Installed correctly in adjacent closet ceiling and you can literally hear nothing (meanwhile pulling 240 cfm). I love it. Best thing i’ve done in a while. I have seen people with fantech units get the same thing, and if i had to do it over i might go with them because they seem less bulky to install.

I have two of these: Panasonic FV-11VQ5 WhisperCeiling 110 CFM Ceiling Mounted Fan – and I think they are great. Make sure that you – or your contractor – measure the square footage of the bathroom so that you have the appropriate size fan for the size of the room. I sized-up, getting a fan a little bigger for the room than required.

**Everyone’s missing the point.** the ceiling fan is useless unless it discharges to the building exterior. Having a fan than propels air into the ceiling cavity does nothing.

Ed: is there a way to vent the mechanical fans to the outside? Or would any of the fans like the Nutone, Broan only vent to the ceiling cavity?
