Advice on remodeling kitchen in a rental

According to me i think, first of all you have to talk to your landlord about it. And then you have to invest money on your kitchen. Then you have to choose the interior designer and select the best design.

Hi, all. I’ve lived in my rent stabilized apartment for 18 years, and it looks like I will never get to buy anything now that it’s a million bucks for a glorified doghouse. So…I’m actually thinking of remodeling my kitchen myself: a washer/dryer, dishwasher, new floor, new (IKEA) cabinets, new fridge. I want to get an estimate and see if my landlord will split it with me. Any suggestions on whom to contact/where to start? I obviously need to do it as inexpensively as possible, although it should be a few steps up from the drunks my landlord sends to fix things now. Thanks!

you can call one of the ikea contractors for a quote… we did this about a year ago, they can do all cabinets as well as appliances (though I’m not sure about W/D)… I think I found the certified installer through this forum. As I recall it was about $6000 for new kitchen.

Your landlord may not approve this. If s/he makes capital improvements s/he gets to up your rent (by 1/40? of cost per month). You paying for part of it undermines that. It also may encourage you to stay in the apartment when s/he might prefer that you leave and s/he get the vacancy rent hike.

Thanks, all. I’m going to check out the IKEA installation folks. My landlord doesn’t give a hoot what I do in here long as I send the rent check in on time–we’ve had a great relationship for 20 years. He’d rather have tenants pay less and just not have to do building upkeep. Hence my desire to improve it myself!

Redoing the kitchen sounds like a great idea. Ikea.com has a great kitchen design tool and that will give you the cabinet prices. Will you hire a contractor at all or do everything yourself? how about refacing the cabinets instead..just putting new doors on the existing cabinets and new countertops..that can save thousands of dollars and a lot of headache
