Curtain Rods -- Level or parallel to a slanted ceiling?
I would do it by eye, since you want this to be visually pleasing, hold them up and see what looks right. use a curtain when you hold it up

We live in an old frame house with rebuilt exterior walls. Floors and ceilings are sloped in all kinds of directions but the new windows and window casings are level with the earth. I want to hang curtain rods above two windows in my daughter’s bedroom. The crown molding above the windows is 2″ higher a bove the right corner of the right window than it is abovew the left corner of the left window. The curtains will obscure much of the window casings. Do I — A. Hang the curtain rods to be parallel with the crown molding, compounding the error but making the most visible lines parallel? or B. Hang the curtain rods to be level with the earth and at the same height as each other, to establish a stronger sense of true level in the room but highlighting the ceiling slant? Would love any and all opinions on this as I’ve gotten conflicting advice so far, but woul dpraticularly welcome advice from any design professionals who deal with this regularly. I imagine there is a right answer to this (but i could be wrong, of course). Much thanks.

Apologies for the typos. I don’t think the forum has an edit function.

Parallel with the crown at the ceiling since they will cover the top of the window casing. Then you’ll never know that nothing is level. If you need to compensate at the floor for the length disaprity, do so.

agree w dibs….parallel to crown and adjust length at bottom

Also agree with DIBS. Before you start drilling, you could also tape up a rod (or something similiar) in both options to see which one you like better. Most likely, the slanted/parralel to the ceiling option will blend in better.

have to disagree. From a functional standpoint, the body knows, and is constantly making suble adjustments in gait and standing muscles, when it is standing on a sloped floor. we also process visually, when in the space, that the ceiling slopes. attempting to mask these features of the room will not work…it will just make the body feel off kilter and ungrounded. do not do this to your daughter, or to yourself. Hang the rod parallel to the ground, not the floor or ceiling.

I agree with brokelin. I don’t think the curtains would hang right if the rods aren’t level.

that, too…thought of but forgot to note. curtains need to hang straight, not slanted.

They’re not going to be noticeable if they are off by 2″ to run parallel with the crown. Besides, you pick the right curtain pattern and it won’t be noticeable at all.
