quick release burglar bars

Empathie00, how did you do? I’m buying a house in Bushwick that was rennovated and has no bars whatsoever and I’m looking into quick release burglar bars for the lowest sets of windows. Would love to have a vendor/installer recommended!!

Please help! Our insurance company has just informed us our homeowners policy will be cancelled if we don’t remove our ground floor (original) security bars on two windows. It makes no sense b/c we have 3 other means of egress from the ground floor, but insurance co refuses to consider any other options. Not having bars on the ground floor windows isn’t an option in our neighborhood, so we’re looking into quick release bars, but we have beautiful, original oak shutter boxes and framing all around and below the windows on the interior, so it seems our options are very limited unless we remove all the old wood – which we won’t do. Does anyone have recommendations for a creative iron smith that could fashion some quick release bars that can be affixed on the outside (but opened from the inside in case of fire)? And able to work quickly, since our cancellation deadline is next Friday?  🙁 Thanks so much in advance.

I would switch insurance companies. If you were in a landmarked area, you would be prevented from altering the window bars by landmarking. This policy also comes up with refinancing. They need to make an exception for historic properties in Brooklyn. We use Rodney Shannon with State Farm in Bed Stuy and haven’t had any problems yet (fingers crossed).
