Hi Everyone, Does anyone know how to check what actual insulation is installed around windows/balcony doors, and in walls?   We had an energy audit  with an infrared meter and know we’d like to know what is actually in the walls. How big a hole in the wall do we need to make and are there people who use those cameras for small spaces for this type of thing that we can hire? According to energy audit no insulation was installed in roof !!   Is that even possible?? Thank you Brownstoner forum. Eveyone stay hydrated in this heat!!!

Gretschgirl, who did the energy audit for you and were you happy with their work? The energy audit determined there was no insulation in the roof but couldn’t determine whether there was insulation in the walls?

Hi Dylan 621, We were happy with energy audit. It showed “leakage” all over the building. Including along baseboards and around lightswitches!   But in order to know exactly how to proceed with insulating the building we need specifics.   It’s complicated as it may impact a suit – A new building and poor construction practices even negligence where roof is concerned.   We need something that can stand up as “proof”,

We don’t have any modern day insulation anywhere and are perfectly happy with our condition. Our wood frame house does have brick nogging for insulation. We are attached on both sides, and this keeps everything very snug. Our original Victorian venting system, the setup of our attic, and our damp rubble wall cellar do not really allow for attic insulation. In any case, whether or not you decide to get insulation, you should definitely look into sealing cracks, doors, windows, and so on first. That will make a much bigger difference than insulation – and the insulation is useless without it. You can also have a big effect with heavy curtains around your windows, storm windows, etc.
