What's the best method to repair an area of peeled-off enamel in the bath tub?

In my experience glazing can last many years in a homeowner lived-in home when the tub is cared for properly and abrasive cleansers are not used and drips handled as soon as they show up. OTOH, glazing may only last a year or two in a tenant apartment. Tough call….

Tenant moved out and left an old, dirty mat attached to the tub floor. When I removed it, it peeled off an area of enamel of about 8″ x 8″ plus some smaller areas. It looks pretty ugly. Is there an easy and inexpensive way of repairing this?

Have the tub glazed.  Al and Dave did mine.  There was a small hole in the tub and the glazing worked.  The glazing lasted at least 10 years.  The company is insured and is located in staten island,  They go everywhere for a job.  Its a 50 year old cast-iron tub.

Hi Starfish.  I only know you from this list and have not seen your bathrooms, but you have told us about them before.  I could be wrong.  I am sorry this happened.  I have never had good enamel come up like that.  The original enamel is glass baked on in a kiln in the factory.   It could come off of a cheap steel tub, which was hit by a heavy object, but that sort of tub might not last as long if “reglazed,” and there might be other problems in the bathroom with a cheap tub like that, or a really old worn out tub.  “Reglaze” is plastic with particles mixed-in applied to existing enamel, or chipped areas.  It can last a few years, but don’t believe anybody who says the fumes are ok to breath.   Many people need renovations or more extensive repairs than they are prepared to pay for.  Many people expected the bathrooms in the homes they purchased to be in better condition than they were.  I suspect you are spending good money after bad.  The tenant may have done something, but maybe the problem was there already.  Good luck.
