Servicing a natural gas furnace/forced hot air system

I am looking for referrals for someone to do an annual servicing and/or provide a service contract for my natural gas, forced hot air heating system in a building in Brooklyn I recently bought. There are two Luxaire Model #GY8S160E30UH21D 160,000 BTU units feeding a web of ducts. Thanks as always….

A program thru National Grid used to service my mothers forced air furnace!!! It’s called Home Serve and u get a contract thru them!! She was satisfied with the annual maintenance program!!!

OP here. I can appreciate that there is a lot to learn about the system and want an experienced and licensed person to be doing the servicing. I rely on this forum to give me some of those questions I should be asking. Things I didn’t know I didn’t know (to channel the late Donald Rumsfeld). So what are those issues I need to think and ask about? And does anyone have other people who are qualified and can recommend from personal experience? I am not saying that Staten Island Heating and Repair is good, bad or indifferent, but I’d am wondering who else is out there? Thanks.

I don’t think everyone is as skilled or as smart as you are MP. I.e Not everyone knows how to build a good site. I believe the second link is their website: https://www.statenislandheatingrepair.com. Some companies choose not to use their business name. In this case, they likely opted for the generic name for search engine optimization. There are other ways to do this but they may be relying on the person who built their web site.

According to Buildzoom they have a verified license (License # 614876). It says GC license however and the link also has their insurance listed.

Not to beat a dead horse…but then, isn’t that what we do here? Googling JM HVAC Staten Island brings up JMmechancalhvacstatenisland dot com which leads to a taken-down website. The next listing under that search is a link to a very generic website at statenislandheatingrepair dot com with a different cell phone number as their main office number. No license number. This looks a lot like a guy either moonlighting or operating illegally. Either way I don’t care. But “caveat emptor”, as they say.

My 60 year old Lennox furnace may be easier to service than something more modern. You just have to put drops of oil in several oil holes, make sure there’s grease in the grease cups (filling them every few years), and change the filter.

Good call out @Chris. Your are right gas work requires licenses and permits. But hr gas requirements are only more stringent now.

1) Educating a client on the value/benefits of regular maintenance does not equate to teaching them how to do it.
2) There is no way most of us want to be squatting like Bob. Though Bob you might want to keep it up as squatting is good exercise.

AFAIK there’s very little service needed for a fii our credit hot air furnace. A Bkyn. Union Gas Co. technician showed me what to do in the early ‘79s and I did it myself until last year when I realized that I was paying for it as part of my Homeserve service contract and squatting behind the furnace to lubricate the motor and check the grease cups wasn’t getting any easier.

There is no license for HVAC but 90% of Forced Air Furnaces are Gas and therefore need licenses and permits to replace; some even require Mechanical Engineering Plans since they are Forced Exhaust. I am not saying it was not done properly, but I am saying you risk a large fine not doing this properly.
I agree with your take on licensed companies being just as bad though as they have a better ability to extort.
I agree with your take on the lack of education, the industry has the incorrect take that if they educate their clients they will become too smart and not use their services.
I go back to my main point though: records. Always have records of what was done, why it was done, etc. so that you cannot be taken advantage of; be it a license company or a fly by night John.

I fundamentally agree. However, I’ve been burned by the licensed companies to the greatest degree and they did the shoddiest work. My luck and their unscrupulousness I suppose.

Also how many plumbers are working in NY unsupervised under someone else’s license. How is a homeowner supposed to to get to the bottom of that?

As far as servicing, the industry does a poor job of educating people on the value and need for it.

Maybe my understanding is not correct.. I thought HVAC (furnace) people didn’t need any credentials to get a license so what good does the license do?

Lastly, in defense of ceci her recommendations mostly have been sound. I haven’t used but cross-checked online. I don’t know about John but in the past she has recommended licensed companies.

Then the forum fills up with posts from people who got burned by “contractors” inevitably followed by countless replies from people who lump us all in together and talk about what thieving pieces of crap we are.

Christ Petri is right. No one ever knows or even asks what a proper servicing entails. All anyone ever knows is how little they can pay for it. This drives me crazy this time every year.

Ton of great companies out there, but my advice is to make sure you know what they are doing and have a record of the results. I have seen too many “servicings” that are just looking and leaving with the client none the wiser.
