Radiators on top floor cold, "boiling" on parlor level.

I’ve been a renter in the same brownstone for about ten years. Every year there is a power struggle at the start of the heating season re: no heat reaching the third floor (where I live) and the people who live on the first floor claiming that it is “boiling”.

The radiators are steam, not hot water, so not a question of bleeding.
The boiler was majorly serviced in 2018 and a new thermostat installed so that the inside temp would be regulated by outside temp.

Radiators in the street facing room (west-ish) are cold to the touch. The single radiator in the garden facing room is warm only around where the pipe connects to the radiator.

Thoughts on what might be causing the issue between the first/parlor floor and the top would be appreciated!

the heat guys are correct. things can go wrong with these things, valves, threads, etc. and changing the vents is for the most part trial and error for us lay people. its best left to them.

Had the same issue and needed the radiators bled on the top floor and the expansion tank drained. All good now

As stated, balanced venting has a lot to do with how steam travels throughout a building. But there are other factors like the compatibility of the boiler’s output to the system’s ability to deliver the steam, allow it to condense, and then return the condensate (water) back to the boiler to be reheated to make more steam. It’s not automatic. It’s a mechanical process in which one thing directly and immediately affects another. I do a lot of work on steam heating systems with my plumbing company: Gateway Plumbing and Heating and I also do a quite a bit of troubleshooting independently through my consulting-only company at www.72Fmechanical.com so I’m well versed on the topic and these repeating issues and how to bring them to permanent resolution.

so they do not boil and you do not freeze, a bigger vent on the upper floor might be a good start. also, a smaller vent down where they are might help them. that chart jeremy posted is a good start.

know that if you begin changing vents, you have to be aware that you can have a bad thread in an old cast iron radiator and that might make it hard to install a new vent. plumbers have ways to deal with something like this (if there is enough metal around it, they can drill and tap and install a bushing or helicoil).

before you begin something like this, check your radiator valves to be sure you can isolate that radiator and obviously don’t change a vent with the system on. but check the valve anyway in case you have an issue installing a vent.

Could be a number of things. Vent sizes on the radiators are a good place to start. This is a helpful reference: https://www.gorton-valves.com/products
