Per Room BTU of 36,000 BTU Heat Pump
Here’s a simple question: If I purchase a 36,000 BTU, 3-Zone heat pump– Is the PER ROOM BTU: 1) 12,000 BTU (ie: 36,000/3) -or- 2) 36,000 BTU By my laymans’ knowledge, in NYC we divide Compressor’s BTU by 50 to get maximum heat/cool square footage. So which scenario below is correct for a 36,000 BTU Heat Pump? 1) Three 240 sq/ft Rooms (As in scenario 1 above) -or- 2) Three 720 sq/ft Rooms (As in scenario 2 above)

OK, Found the answer online, here:

What does the single – dual zone terminology mean?
Zone refers to how many air-handlers the unit comes with out of box. Our Mini Splits come with either a single zone, dual zone, tri-zone or quad-zone setup. The listed condenser capacity will be divided between the zone outputs in multi-zone systems. For example, a 48000 BTU Dual zone Mini Split will have 2 – 24000 BTU zones. It is most ideal to get an air handler for each room, however, one air handler will be more than sufficient for multiple rooms as long as the total area you are trying to cool is within the limits of the unit’s BTU capacity.
So simple, yet it took me hours to find.

Thanx… But you miss my larger point. Does a 36,000 BTU, 3 Zone Heat Pump, blow 36,000 BTU in EVERY ZONE? -Or- Is 36,000 BTU the TOTAL Capacity of the compressor, which gets distributed over MULTIPLE ZONES?

Cooling load is calculated based on many factors, but not on square footage. There are free or cheap trial software versions on Internet such as HVAC- calc and others. Good installer must know how to properly size equipment and never will size equipment base on square footage.
