installing a radiator
Anyone know the ballpark cost to have a new steam radiator installed? basically the existing one is big and positioned so as to take up space that could otherwise be occupied by a desk or bookshelf so i want to have a new one installed under the window adjacent to it. i do not think this would involve any plumbing changes other than having the pipe valve coming out of the floor elbow to the right rather than the left…….any insight is much appreciated.

any chance we can steer this back to my original question???? the existing unit is
24″ wide x 8″ deep x 38″ tall
and the new placement would be under a window that is
36″ wide and the windowsill is 25″ off the floor
is it even possible to get a radiator that would match the output and not mess up the entire building’s system while fitting into that new space?

Jeremy, i am not saying that what you have is wrong in the sense that something can go wrong with it and hurt someone or damage the property, i don’t know. But with the decline in professionalism over the past twenty or so years, many contractors will go ahead and do what a customer asks for without knowing or having the confidence to turn around and look them in the eye and say “we can’t do this this way” or “yes we can do it but it will cost $$$$$”.
This instance might be a case and point and that is why the plumbers are pushing back. I saw it when you first posted it and knew it was a baseboard and thought “a handyman did it”. After reading what the others are saying, my thought is that a true proessional would have said to you “we can do it and they make a radiator for it and i know where to get it”.
The reason i am saying this is, i suspect you, like many people on this board are a bit younger and less experienced than many of us and come to accept that shoddy work is simply how it is done these days. Its not. Professionals still exist and we would b e wise to support them. The person who did this would have been wise to have found a radiator designed to be hung on a wall and told you “its this or nothing” (even if only to preserve their own professionalism). As it is now, I question how this is secured and i have spent a lifetime hanging a lot of very heavy stuff on all manner of substrate.

Master_Plumber times have changed; it is a client satisfaction driven market at the end of the day.
Our company would do an install like that if that is really what you wanted to do. We simply are specific in our Invoice, slap a Claim Sticker on the underside of the unit stating it was installed wrong on purpose and even put a little secret marking on it to further identify that it was a client chosen installation.

@randolph I find that wooden checkers make better looking shims than wood blocks when needing to lift a modern radiator. Wood glue between them (and to the floor if you are set on the look) when stacking adds stability

@master plvmber I don’t tell contractors what’s best. I tell them what’s best for me. My favorite vendors are the ones who tell me how it is supposed to be done, but then work with me to customize their expertise to apply to my need. The picture I posted above is a perfect example of that

@master plvmer my client would strongly disagree with your claim that the savings in floor space is subjective.
This thing is quiet and has no leaks. Look at the significant pitch used to achieve that. 6 feet and under has worked well for this application many times over. Don’t do this application in a length over 7 feet.
Your slenderized recommendation would not have been as low profile as needed here but I’ll definitely keep in mind for a large and high end renovation I’m managing in SoHo. Thanks for the recommendation!

Yes. I’m well aware of the role of a property management company. We spend hours every year being told what’s best by people making price-driven, rather than mechanically sound, decisions.

@eman137 I find that usable floor space is much more important to property managers who are trying to maximize rents than it is to plumbers. The Runtal radiators look great but you can see from my picture that they do not accomplish the low profile goal that mounting a baseboard radiator directly to wall does. Every inch matters in an 80 square foot room without a closet when trying to maximize rents. Could I have had a carpenter cut out the wood baseboard and install directly on floor? Sure. Client didn’t want to pay for that. Instead, I got a plumber to do a technically sound installation in less than 24 hours. I understand it is not the intended use but it works very well here.
I’m curious if the stainless steel Runtals retain heat as long as cast iron models. I would not want to mix and match those in a multi family building if they go cold faster than the other rooms/units sporting cast iron

@jeremykiltspropmgr The manual for this type of radiator specifically states it’s not compatible with 1-pipe steam as the small ¾” pipe connection does not allow for sufficient counterflow of steam and returning condensate uniquely created by 1-steam systems. Did it really save that much floor space? Whatever. That’s subjective. But this is not the first time it’s been tried and there are multiple products specifically for this application.

Look, if it works for you, then there’s nothing to discuss. It’s just surprising. I would expect some amount of condensate to leak out of that air vent though, and certainly some noise.

@master plvmber what comparable wall mounted unit would you prefer in this location?
Does this one look the best? No. Does it it save a ton of floor space? Yes. Can it be made to look better with a slim line wooden cover if needed? Yes. A Real Good Plumber is the only plumber I have been able to trust so far to install wall mounted radiators. This one helped me rent an alcove studio in Chelsea at a one bed price. Did the plumber prefer a floor unit? Probably. Instead they installed what I asked to achieve my client’s desire of highest rent at lowest unit prep expense

I have to agree w/ MP…that is a god awful installation. That is a section of cast iron baseboard designed to rest on the floor…I’ve also known the owner of the plumbing outfit for 30 plus years and its hard to believe that is his company’s work…

@jeremykiltspropmgr Are you sure A Real Good Plumber did that radiator installation? I know the owner fairly well and I think he would know not to use a piece of cast iron baseboard heater for 1-pipe steam. And hanging it on the wall like that? Never. There are wall hung radiators made specifically for that. What’s in your picture is not a good installation by any professional standard.

this is a concern of mine because i am in a multi family building with a shared heating system. if the new unit is sized correctly (in this case it needs to be physically shorter but could be wider or deeper) to match the old unit I would think there would be no issues? I also was hoping to get this work done before the heating season starts so as to not interrupt any of the neighbors.
