Cold Weather, Long Boiler Run Times, & Manual Feed & Low Water Shut Off
Check the water level in your boilers and also drain down the low water shut off.
i drained my low water shut off down probably two months ago after months of not doing it. I did it with the boiler firing to see that it worked. It did NOT work. A lot of dirty water came out but the float ball or whatever inside failed to drop so i tapped on the housing of the low water cut off with the handle of a screw driver and sure enough, a bunch of mud came out and the boiler shut down.
Yesterday the boiler failed to come on. We have a known leak in the system and generally i have to add make up water once every few weeks during the winter. due to the cold, we have been running the boiler a lot more and this ran some water out of the boiler. it activated the low water cut-off. Had i not drained that device down two months ago (and discovered it was not working), it would have failed and that would have been it for our boiler.
Heating people can advise better, but i used to be told we should be draining down the lwco like once every two weeks during the heating season.

in truth, most systems i see now a days have auto feeds and in the rare cases that people have the old style low water cut off, those people know what they have and over the years some boiler guy has told them to drain that thing like once every two weeks in the heating system.
