A/c installation permit requirement for detached single-family house?
Within NYC, are permits required to install a 3 ton (36,000 BTU) central air conditioning for a single-family detached home? The condensing units will be placed on the ground, not the roof. High-velocity mini-ducts will be installed.
The NYC 311 website suggests it’s not required (https://portal.311.nyc.gov/article/?kanumber=KA-02551), but I’m not sure if that is the definitive source.
Thank you for your guidance!

I couldn’t follow your link, but the Rules of New York (1 RCNY §101-14) lists work exempt from permit. If you’re using an external condenser, then it’s a split system, which is exempt only under the following conditions:
Air conditioning and ventilating system installed as a voluntary system, serving only one floor of a building, and that:
(1) does not use lot line openings for the intake or exhaust of air or the mounting of equipment; and
(2) is not installed in any public hallway, passageway, or stairway; and
(3) does not in any way reduce the ventilation of any room or space below that required by code provisions; and
(4) does not penetrate any fire division, roof, floor, or wall.
So, if you’re installing a central system that cools more than one floor, you must file it.

Your supplier/installer should know about this. I don’t think it’s needed except for a permit for the crane that will put the unit on the roof.
