1960's bldg - hot water baseboard heat
Need help fast, please!
What reason would each line in each apartment on top floor need to be drained?….i was told something to do with air.

There is no need to do anything. System pressure regulator must be set to static pressure, equal to height of the top radiator plus dynamic resistance of the system plus 5 psi. Total static system pressure must be no more then 3/4 of the pop safety valve setting. Air eliminator and expansion tank must be connected at point of no pressure change in the system. Expansion tank must be charged to water pressure regulator setting. After you do that, no need to drain, bleed or other nonsense.

I prefer the minical to the Taco Hy-Vent, they are really a different mechanism. The Minical is a float type valve with a hygroscopic cap that seals in the event that the float leaks, whereas the Hy-Vent has a hygroscopic disc type seal and no backup mechanism for leaks. The hygroscopic disc seal needs to dry out in order to release the air which may take a long time or never happen depending on the conditions, whereas the float should respond immediately and the cap on the minical causes the valve to fail without leaking, which is the biggest reason not to use an automatic valve.

I found a valve I like for hydronic rads and baseboard. The caleffi minical with the check valve, for changeouts, the hydroscopic cap to close it off if the float fails and it leaks. That way you don’t have to deal with periodically bleeding radiators in your tenant units.

Probably just releasing the air from the top radiators from the little airvalve until water comes out will do the trick
