What is the best way to send the bath exhaust to the roof? I have a pretty typical brownstone with a flat roof. I have two 4″ dia ducts coming into a closet below the roof and I want to vent them up through the roof. The vent hoods I see are made for a vertical run through a wall or for a sloped roof. I have seen some that go strait up and then have a gooseneck above the roof but those don’t have a damper. I’m thinking of building an 18″ high box on the roof so the ducts can go up and then use a typical wall hood with damper and bird screen. Seems like it would work but is there a better way to do this?

Our roofer handled all this for us. Our air shaft ends in a skylight. The vent pipe for the main stack goes through the skylight roof. Originally, this skylight had air vents as well, though I believe the new one we replaced it with does not have air vents. We still get a breeze down the air shaft to the bathroom windows that open on to it. Maybe the air is coming from our other air vents in the roof, the small ones that end in the high hats.

I’d like to hear if somebody else has an answer to this. Like Cate, I’ve got newly installed bath vents running to the roof ending with high hats. At least in the bathroom just below the roof you can clearly hear outside sounds because of the lack of damper. Maybe one should have been added just after the fan – like those dryer vent dampers? Or maybe one designed for a flat roof could be somehow mounted on the roof instead of the high hat like MDF suggests. I’d think this would be best for keeping warm air in in the wintertime. Also, I suspect (perhaps wrongly) that flies and mosquitoes might be able to get in via the open vent line.

Fan should have damper, if not they sell them seperately to place wherever you like. like this: http://www.amazon.com/Fantech-9800000-RSK-4-Backdraft-Damper/dp/B000CDAFE6 I had an hvac guy install an ERV on my roof and he made sure to get it off the ground. Seal with pitch pocket on bottom. Past years i’ve had a foot or two of snow on roof, so make sure you get enough clearance to prevent blockage. Basically though as long as you make sure a proper pitch pocket is installed that is prob the most important part, water and leaks are not your friend. Finally, insulated duct is always better to prevent condensation in your cockloft.

Thanks for the input. Yes, the bath fans have dampers, but I like the idea of stopping the cold air, bugs etc. before they come into the house. The fantech damper looks like it is meant for a horizontal run, I’m not sure if it would work here for a vertical duct. I’m going to think a little more about this…
