AC Window Unit Quiet on the OUTSIDE?

If the whole unit is actually actually moving/scraping, I guess that could be fixed. Otherwise, quality of install makes no difference to *outside* noise level as the noise is, well, outside anyway. The compressor/fan could be damaged in install, but that’s less likely. A bent fan blade will make a roaring noise. A bad compressor will whine and/or make rhythmic sounds. I wish stores would plug in a/cs so you could listen to how bad they are…are there any?

Our 1st floor tenants have a window-mounted GE ac unit that’s very loud when we’re in the backyard – anyone know if the quieter units (such as the Friedrich Kuhl series) are also quiet from the outside? Thanks.

In my experience, a/cs which are quiet on the inside are also quiet outside, it’s a matter of build quality. That said, if the a/c is very loud, it’s old & cranky…they get that way as the motors run unevenly due to imbalance and vibration. I’d get a new one.

Oh, and GE is low-quality junk, I have had three & now swear by Freidrich (not Kuhl yet, out of my price range)

cmu, it IS a new unit- definitely a crappy GE unit. But I know that many quiet units require careful window installation, so as to insulate the inside from the outside, where the compressor and fan are. Has anyone dealt with this specific issue?
