Wood Finishing Class for Beginners

For me to continue these classes, i will obviously want to make a little money at them. For me to do that, i cannot come on this board and market myself (it is against the policy of Brownstoner). Someone else has to ask the question just like the op did here and then i can chime in. if you have dates you desire and a specific project, why not contact me and we can talk? or shoot me an email. with respect to repairing the finish on the front door of your house, that could easily be covered in a class and i used that very same method on my wood floor during the class the other day (same idea, different kind of varnish).

i have had conversations with three people since i did the class on saturday and i supect i will be asked to put a wood stripping class together. stand by,

I had a home inspection done last Friday with Steve Cymbalski of Brownstone Home Inspection and The Tinker’s Wagon.  Steve has broad knowledge in everything buildings and expertise in wood work and wood finishing.  I gained more knowledge about my house during that inspection than I have in the 7 years i have owned the place. 

Upon showing him the state of my brownstone doors, he spent a half hour telling me what i can do to salvage the existing finish on the doors.  I told him it would be great if he can teach a class and that I would sign up if he did.   Well, he has told me if i can get some people together, he could be available this coming Saturday for 2 or 3 hours at his shop for 3 to 5 people. There would be a modest price for this instruction which when divided 4 ways would be very little.   He is not doing this as a profit making venture.   He will discuss:
– Types of sanders and sand paper grits and technique
– Stains and staining
– Varnishing and different varnishes
– Toning top coats
– Epoxies, epoxy additives, and repairing splits in wood with epoxies

You can bring a picture of your project – doors, floors, anything that’s made of wood in your home and needs finishing – and he will do his best address the issue and how to fix it yourself.

Brownstoners:

for years i have gotten calls from people who have read me on here and have offered to pay me to teach them things. I do not have a business model set up for this even though i wish i could help people learn what i know and do.

As for the op, she would probably pay me what it would take to get me to go back to her house with some tools and show her what to do on her doors. But i do not think it is right to charge someone what would be fair to me to do something like this if we can find a cheaper way to do it with the same results (i have said that to people in my contracting business for years). what i am saying is, i am trying to do someone a favor by offering this class. I hope others will consider joining in so a few people can benefit. I am not trying to make money on this-

also, if this were to work out, i can set up other classes such as lock installation, perhaps roof repair, metal polishing, wood stripping? these could be two hour classes. i do touch on some of these topics during in depth home inspections – i just cannot really teach because i am not carrying the tools and the time would get out of hand.

This is exactly the type of class I’ve been looking for, though aggravatingly, I cannot make this Saturday. Hoping this gets some traction as I would also be very interested in a class on wood stripping technique!

i can include something about wood stripping (what you need to know is the knives and tools to use so you do not damage the wood when it is soft). we can switch this to sunday but it is up to op.. i can probably do Friday if people agree.

We are 1,000% interested-I have books and books on the subject (never cracked) and still have tons of wood to strip and finish yet in the house and couldn’t think of a better or more entertaining person to learn from.

Ill be there, and can’t wait. I have an exterior door that’s in pretty bad shape – curious what you think about the rot at the bottom of the door, and in general if and how it can be made to look better with all the abuse its taken over the years. I also have an huge interior parlor door that has some blonde splotchiness to it that I’d be curious if you think there’d be a way to stain it to hide that. It’s a reddish wood which I’ve always found harder to match stains for.

Someone might be bringing a smaller interior door for us to use as an example but if they do not, i have some doors on my benches i can demonstrate on.

also, i have a bare spot on a floor in my house and i plan on sanding that spot and explaining how to treat that and blend it into the larger floor with poly..

i just stripped one side of a door last night but could not wait – it is a project for a customer and i have to keep it moving. i will use it tomorrow to explain why we have to sand after stripping. I also made new moldings for this door and i will talk about why it is just plain easier to sometimes throw old stuff away.

this is the truth about wood stripping: it is labor. repetitive labor. the chemicals i use are nasty and against the law to sell on the retail market (methylene chloride). I also mix my own lye.

A year ago a woman on this board called me and wanted to PAY me to teach her to strip wood. this is what I TOLD her: if i had a stack of doors here i would PAY you $20 an hour to come strip them – paid OJT. that offer could stand at some future date for people who come here tomorrow. Trust me, there is nothing to stripping wood.

I will talk about stripping and what we use and the most important thing is the tools we use so we do not damage the wood.
