Wood burning stove

Hey, i have some oak cutoffs that i saved for someone who at one time had a fire pit. Two contractor trash bags. I hate throwing anything out. Free, pickup in 11379.

Oak is a good wood for burning.

So our brownstone has second floor kitchen which we do not use as a kitchen. It use to have “black” stove with chimney long ago. Would it be possible to restore the chimney and put a wood burning stove there? I understand it is a crazy idea, but would not it be a “grandfasering” in some way? Given that we property line the chimney and everything. Also is there a specialist who can take up this project?

Consider having the chimney lined. There are chimney service companies who can provide advice. Look on line.

A couple years ago someone came on here with a question about retrofitting a stove into a fire place and i called a chimney and flue installation company here in queens or brooklyn. This sort of thing was in their wheelhouse. I can’t recall the name.

I am pretty sure you would be grandfathered. It is existing and not new construction and i doubt you pull a permit to line a flue. That is more maintenance. If there is any doubt, say there had always been a stove there but you refused to use it because of the unlined flue.

All of the above sounds correct to me also. I believe it is still possible to restore, repair and update existing wood burning fireplaces including lining the chimney although new wood burning fireplaces are not allowed in Brooklyn/NYC. I have never heard of a need for a permit to line a chimney. We had a chimney (for our boiler) relined in 2010 or 2011 or so and it did not require a permit. Be sure to use a highly recommended and reputable chimney company with tons of years of experience, of course. (Things can go wrong, such as you can get a puffback.) It’s probably less frantic and less expensive to do it in the non-heating season also.

The point that a permit is not needed to do this implies that the city has no idea that the flue might have sat unused for decades and this denies them the ability to say you have installed something new. If i had a flue in my house today and was worried about preserving my right to use that flue in the future in spite of the increasing regulation, i would probably find an old $50 cast iron stove at a yard sale, install it, burn one piece of paper in it once a year and if i went to reline some years from now and it was called into question, i would say i always had it and in fact used it from time to time.

I think you are pretty safe now. But with increased regulation you may not be. Some of this will depend on your neighbors. If the smoke bothers them they may call and say you never had a stove. Might not work their way but might open a can of worms.

You’ll want to ensure a stainless steel liner is used, and regardless of flue condition make sure it is an insulated. You’ll also want to ensure proper clearances. I found Hearth.com helpful for information gathering. Wood burning stoves have a lot of nuance to them but are great once you get them going.
