Wood Box Gutter Carpenter Rec?
If you decide you want to change the gutter and rear cornice, you might want to speak to carpenters or a siding company as well as a roofer. The roofer will, ideally, supply and install the right type of gutter that is suitable for your roof. (Gutters for flat roofs are different.)

We’ve got a leak caused by rotted fascia and wood on an original wooden box gutter/cornice combo on the rear of our townhouse. We’ve been passed around from one person to the next, our contractor was inattentive and somehow missed it, and delivered the house without fixing it. We need this gutter fixed ASAP, and a bunch of roofers won’t touch it since it is both original and wooden. Anybody got any recs for someone up to the job?

Unfortunately I can’t recommend anyone since I work for Brownstoner (and our roofer recently retired) but these types of gutters are extremely common in Brooklyn so you are not alone. The way it was handled on my house is the roof material went right into the gutter and covered the gutter. Luckily, we did not have any leaks. Incidentally, as part of a recent siding redo (wood frame house) we removed the cornice/fascia and replaced it with a plain board/new fascia and a modern externally hung metal gutter.

Contractors will often suggest changing the route of the leader to dispense water into the yard instead of into the house’s main drain pipe in the cellar and out into the city sewer, but it’s unneeded and everyone I know who has altered it has had problems with drainage, French drains, you name it — an ongoing nightmare. Best just to keep things the way they are if they ain’t broke yet.
