Windows: Pella VS Anderson VS Crystal???

Go to Brooklyn Door and Window (or another) to see their showroom and have a sales person explain the differences. Verify insect screens and their functionality (can you take them out to hose them down easily). Ease of tilt in, since you’ll need to clean your windows. How good the seal is, and therefore how quiet your interior will be. Low maintenance exterior, so they don’t rot or need repainting. Pre-finished interiors to start enjoying them as soon as they’re installed.

Gutting my townhouse and was debating between Pella and Anderson, and then recently noticed a lot of new builds in the neighborhood with Crystal windows. Any advice?

Also Jeld-wen? My architect says Pella’s become overpriced and Jeld-wen offers similar quality at much lower price. (I hope he’s right!)

I would avoid Crystal as its a lower quality brand. Most of the renovations and new construction I see uses Jeld-Wen with Pella, Anderson and Marvin mixed in. We installed Marvin and are very happy.

Crystal is really poor quality. Pella and Anderson are very similar in quality so go with the one you like best and who your GC has a good relationship with.

Based on the recurring threads like this one, That suggest Pella, Marvin, and Anderson are all of equal quality, I suggest putting your hands on them and trying them out for comfort and ease of use. Crystal is garbage.

I have both Marvins and Andersens in homes currently. I find the Marvin “push-pin” style screens annoying to put in and take out.

I have Marvin, Andersen and Pellas in my home. I love the Marvins (absolutely air tight, solid, quiet, good looking) but they are fiercely expensive. Our Andersen’s have held up very well and would be my mid-range choice over Pellas. Our Pellas were not a brick-to-brick install (nor were the Andersens) but after 15 years I am ready to replace them. They don’t close properly or open smoothly, and the caulking is a magnet for dust and dirt. Skimpy and under-built IMHO.

Marvin and Jeld-Win are great choices. With Jeld-Win you can save some money without sacrificing having a very quiet interior, but I’d stick with double hung types. Can’t go wrong with Marvins. You should use silicon type caulk on the exterior, which will not ‘dust up.’ On the interior, you can use acrylic paintable caulk and the paint can protect the caulk from attracting dirt.

We used Ideal Majestic. We went to the Crystal showroom in Queens and thought their windows felt and looked very cheap. The Ideals have so far been good – we’ll see how well they last long term. Got them from Windows We Are.

We have a mix of new windows. We got Andersen 400s, vinyl-clad wood exterior wood interior, which are clean and nice enough but the tilt-in mechanism is pretty crappy–essentially you force in the vinyl track with a sliding plastic wedge. It works so far and they’re pretty air tight, but are a little tough to slide open and I’m sure the tilt and turn will break some day with normal use. Ditto with off-the-shelf low-end Pella’s from Lowes–not as nice as the 400s but fine enough for a clean wood window. Andersen 200s aren’t worth a look (but we got those too).

One pleasant surprise is the aluminum tilt-and -turn egress window we got from R. King Windows in Greenpoint or Williamsburg. So terrific, clean construction, excellent mechanism, totally quiet, has thermal breaks which should cut down heat transfer, and wasn’t pricey considering the size. The action is precise and smooth and they made it in under a week. One of the best purchases we made.
