Direct from Pella if you need them fastish. Or else Bay Ridge Windows if you want Marvin. I know it’s a popular opinion that Marvin windows are the best, but I personally (and based on opinions from pros we hired) don’t think there is much difference between them when you get to quality wood/alum clad windows. Pella did ours in a few months and for a comparable but slightly lower price than Marvin. Pella also did the landmarks approval in house fors less than our architect would have charged (and he was supportive of them handling because they do it every day) and got approval without comments from LPC.

Oh yes! Definitely keep your windows if they are original. The replacement windows are garbage. (We have replacement windows, they were already here when we moved in.) The original windows can be stripped, repaired, refinished and reglazed and will last forever. With storm windows (such as easy to use and invisible new interior storms), they will keep out cold way better than replacement windows.

As a wood worker involved in restoration, i want to agree with what cate and colonial are saying. But the realities of dealing with old wood windows, rebuilding the sash so they work, and the cost of doing this if there is a lot of rot (which requires work beyond stripping and painting) presents a serious challenge.

Olek lejbzon in newark is one company that rebuilds windows.

FWIW I couldn’t find anyone to rebuild my wooden windows, with many rotted parts, back in the mid-70s. There were people who advertised in the Brownstoner (then the newsletter of the Brownstone Revival committee) and the (then Brooklyn-based) Old House Journal, but they weren’t very responsive. I ended up with triple-glazed aluminum replacement windows which have held up well for 45 years, or so, with only occasional replacement of spring balances. Of course these wouldn’t have been allowed after my neighborhood was landmarked in 1979.

Ok, so windows we are was on a job i was servicing a door on and that customer was happy. But me thinks they only service vinyl and aluminum windows. They do things like the balances and lock hardware.

IMHO, Pella windows are useless. We have Marvins, Anderson and Pella wood double hung replacement windows in our house — listed in quality order. The Pellas are thin and under structured. They no longer close tightly and so are massively drafty. The Andersons are just fine. The Marvins come out top because of their heft and draft free construction. Cate recommends keeping original wood windows but a) I have NEVER found a skilled tradesperson in NYC to restore old windows; and b) if they are not double glazed (and if they are truly original, they won’t be), you’ll have the additional cost and nuisance of installing storm windows.

There is someone who does nothing but restore old wood windows, but I can’t say more than that because I work for Brownstoner. If you want to do it yourself, this is certainly possible, going one window at a time over years, and using any of the many books on the subject as a guide such as the Windows Restorer Bible. Anna Dorfman of Door Sixteen restored all her windows herself in her old house in Newburgh, N.Y., and documented the process (she has since moved to New Mexico). New storms come in interior versions and are easier to handle than the storm windows of old.

Cate’s likely referring to Peter Madias at Method Restoration, who has worked wonders on a handful of challenging window restorations for us. He is a master carpenter in every sense, and will build you storm windows as well.

In addition to looking far nicer than replacements, wood windows can be maintained for centuries, and will perform better (and cheaper) in the long run compared to modern replacements that will end up in landfill within 20 years.
