Window company for replacement

We are planning a brick-to-brick replacement of some windows, with Kolbe or Marvin all wood. Any recommendations on one or the other? We are concerned with stopping the draftiness, ease of tilt for cleaning, and looks. Also, any experience with Windows We Are? Their price was significantly lower than Adler Windows in Manhattan.

We had the windows on the North side of our (landmarked) house replaced brick-to-brick with wood Marvins by Authentic Window Design in Westchester. The windows themselves look great and addressed a lot of our issues with drafts, and our experience with the workmen was among the best we had over the course of a couple of renos. Hey resident2 thanks but this rep engaged in a blanket trashing of one of the most respected window manufacturers in the game., and a brand they carry. It was about general quality rather than anything site specific, rep saying “if I buy this brand’s window it will break.” It went beyond that and there were other things that bothered me but I’ve already digressed too much here from the topic of this thread.

Chances are 70 percent of Brownstoner readers have this brand in their home and bought it specifically for its reputation for quality.

I’m very familiar with standard salesmanship games -been around the block a few times and seems some doozies but this was pretty crappy.

OP, are you landmarked? What resident2 said about landmarking is def a valid concern.

Boolsgolden; I always dealt with Vinny for many years, the last time he had long ago retired I am sure I dealt with one of his sons, but I forget his name. But that said because a ‘salesman” trashed the company that referred you to them, I would take with a grain of salt… “salesmen” these days are not always the most well mannered communicators… just keep asking the pertinent questions.. … I often find myself sounding like a 2 year old..why? why.. why..? They do not know the answer to why… wait until the tech guy comes out to see your site, project etc they normally know why one brand of windows will work better for your project over another.

I’ve also had windows installed by Historical, back when they were EZ-Tilt. I felt bad about the high price at the time but much better now that I’ve seen how well their work has held up over the years. Good installation is everything and our Marvins look great, are amazingly draft free, and quiet. So, with hindsight, well worth the cost. We dealt with Vinnie but he may have retired by now.

Hey @resident2 — who did you usually deal with at Historical?

We got a (veeeeerrrry expensive) quote from them and were still willing to spring the $$$ but the way one of the younger Historical reps trashed a certain brand of windows that they sell (after this brand’s person referred us to them!) turned us off so much we decided to take our business elsewhere.

We still have more windows to do and would be interested in perhaps using them with a better sales rep.

My house is not landmarked but I went with the aluminum clad over wood with the 6 over six panes both inside the glass and inside the house, double panes laminated windows. Every upgrade I could. The install was flawless and the windows are wonderful. I can’t get over the drop in my heating cost. My gas bill was just $88 this last month. Windows are Us, I highly recommend.

If you are in a Landmark District; the often arbitrary Landmarks Commission does not want you to do Brick to Brick replacement of windows. They want the original wood moldings restored and preserved. This as I said is arbitrary.
A company I have used many times over the years for Landmark window replacement is: www.historicalwindows.com They started out on Ave U in Brooklyn as EZ Tilt windows and now have a Manhattan address, but are “still” a family run business that stands by their work. I last used them for a job five years ago so I say “still” meaning as of the last dealings I had with them. Not the cheapest financially, but by far the cheapest from stress & aggravation.
If you are not Landmarked then I would say use what ever style manufacturer you like but bare in mind the quality of installation has much more today with drafts, fit etc than the actual manufacture of the window. I have seen top of the line Marvins, Andersons, whatever installed wrong and they can be a mess!

I had windows are we replace all my windows this past December. They did a great job and were incredibly professional. Highly recommend them.

FWIW, the plastic trim/two tilt latches never bothered me on the Marvin Wood/Ultrex windows. Other than the plastic on the tilt latches I’m not even sure where on the windows the plastic trip booisgolden is referring to.

Btw, I may be the only one so particular about the plastic trim on the windows. We did lots of in person window shopping and at least two salespeople looked at me like I was the only person ever to notice it, or care, even though it really stuck out like a sore thumb to me.

So go look for yourself. Other brands’ “all wood” interiors also have this plastic on it too. Can’t remember on Kolbe but I don’t think they had it.

In the end there are some very nice wood windows out there sans plastic too but it was Marvin reputation for backing their product that got us.
