Window AC - seller and installer

Hi all –

Wondering if anyone has a reco for a Window AC seller and installer? We need to purchase 4 window AC units (thinking about Friedrich Kuhl) and just wondering if there is a better option than just going to PC Richards and figuring it out ourselves. I also read that some places offer seasonal cleaning and storage so if anyone has any experience around that I’d love to hear about it. Thanks in advance.

I would buy in one place and find an installer elsewhere. I used someone on TaskRabbit for installation and it was great. If you want both, PC Richard is great. They deliver and I think will install. Lowe’s is good for both purchasing and installation. Avoid Home Depot. Most of the stuff in low end and they are horrible at installation. Drimmer’s has good prices but you need to have the exact make and model number to order. They have no showroom to speak of and don’t install.
Btw, Friedrich is a great premium brand known for being super quiet. But the question is whether you need a premium brand for every room. I bought several GEs and they have been great. And they cost half of what Friedrich does.

Just wanted to add that J&R Appliances on 7th Ave in Park Slope will match most big box retailers. Just give them the make and model # you’re interested in. They also deliver and install. Reasonable repairs too. Not sure if they offer winter storage for ACs. Ask for Ralph. 718-638-3040.

We have a Kuhl. In general, it is shockingly quiet and operates well. There are three downsides to consider in addition to the get-a-second-mortgage cost (although we would probably buy it again).

First, it is HUGE compared to other units of the same btu rating. Check that it will fit in your window and make sure you are comfortable with how much of your window (i.e., light and view) it will take up. Even after measuring carefully before buying, it was surprising to see when we got it installed.

Second, the APP IS TERRIBLE . I believe that they have come out with a new app. Hopefully that will be better. Compared to the app for our other AC, the Friedrich takes a long time (i.e., minutes) for the AC to react, can only be used in landscape mode on your phone, feels like it was written in 1982, etc.

Third, it is very HEAVY. Our previous AC did not need a large bracket, but this one does. On the positive, the fact that it slides out of a sleeve makes installation modestly easier, but size and weight are real issues.

Lowe’s sells GE “Ultra Quiet” models. We bought two last year to replace 15-yr-old units and have been very happy with them. Try Yelp for installation referrals.
