Which way do you face to determine which is the "right side fence" custom?

And btw, the code that “vinca” posts about protection fences and retaining walls is not for residential rear fences.

My neighbor wants me to replace a rotting fence that sits on the property line, saying it’s mine. He says the block uses the “right fence” custom, but he points to the adjoining fence when he’s facing the back of the property. At another brownstone I own, it’s according to the property’s orientation–which faces the street. That would make our adjoining fence his right side fence.
