Which Door Should Be Main Door with Lock
@suebklyn – ah, ok. My main house is to the left, which is how I plan to have the door open, but all the houses in my row open the same way, so this has no bearing in the case of the houses on my block.

Taking a quick Brownstoner poll. I’m replacing a single door with more original double doors and wondering which door should be the main locking door (left or right). My brownstone is set that the entry door is to the right of the space.

Whatever feels most comfortable give whether you are right handed or left. Usually the left one is stationery with the right one opening first with the hardware if I’m reading correctly what you are describing.

My doors are like what DIBS describes; I agree that you could do the reverse, if you find it more comfortable

I am replacing my doors as well, and on my block, for whatever reason, all the original doors had the left one open and the right one stationary, so that is what I am doing.

@EJR I’m noticing that the main lock door seems to open up towards the main house and not against the side wall. Wondering if that is the case with most brownstones.

@suebklyn – I don’t follow what you mean by “main house” vs. “side wall”. My row house is in the middle of the row and attached on both sides. Which side would be the “main house” and which side the “side wall”?

@EJR – Main house would be towards your windows/living space. Side wall is the wall directly against your entrance door
