Hi,
As part of a gut we unfortunately have a lot of extra materials that we’ve paid for. Specifically, we have 16 steel beams that were to be used for our deck, multiple packets of crown molding from Dykes that it’s too late to take back…I believe they measure 7 1/2 inches and there are 7-9 packets, and a brand new heat pump system that we decided not to use.
First, where can we resell these things. Preferably in Brooklyn but anywhere. Do you think businesses that sell steel beams might want to purchase these? Second, if anyone is interested, please contact me at classc199 at a o l dot com.
Thanks

as part of my business i have always bought and sold used shop tools (its how i have upgraded my shop at little cost to me). a lot of the stuff i do not need ends up on Craigslist or Ebay.
i am not sure how much heat pumps cost. but if this is a 2k item and you are willing to let it go for say 1,000 plus shipping, i would consider ebay (and if the warrenty will transfer, you might get a little more). you will get a national audience and can freight it (i know, a pain in the neck but if your price is right, buyers will send shippers to pick it up and pack it;). But you can also specify local pick up only and you will be surprised who might drive from NJ or Ct for something like this – if the price is right. i had a guy come down from CT for a table saw some years back. i drove to central NJ for a table saw a decade ago.
i would put the steel on Craigs List (i sometimes troll craigslist looking for lumber for my business) but i did give my son some things of mine to sell and he put it on something called Let Go. it went. put the crown molding on CL or i would post a photo of it here on BS. they do not seem to mind homeowners posting a few things. the steel might go here as well, maybe a contractor will see it.
there are these dealers in used material. we know the one under the BQE by lowes but there are some guys at 47 storer ave on staten island. they deal in all sorts of industrial stuff and i was looking for some steel a few months back and they had some listed on CL. this is the problem, with trying to deal with these guys. they will want it for NOTHING. it is not that they are greedy, it is that this stuff on the secondary market will be sold at a discount anyway and if they have to pick it up and store it until they can move it, it takes space and time and resources and if they damage it in the process, they buyer has a bargaining chip. you are better trying to move it yourself.
keep something in mind when pricing stuff you might be trying to market to a business or contractor. say me, when i go to buy a used machine off CL, i have to consider the price and then consider the cost of my time (what that will cost me to leave my work in my shop or leave a job) and fuel to drive to where ever to buy that tool and if driving 50 miles away will cost me a lot of money in terms of lost production, it is better for me to buy whatever it is brand new from the retailer down the road or even have it shipped. this is why marking something down 25% below what you paid for it, especially if it is something business people want, often will not work if they can get it close by. it comes down to dollars and cents for businesses.
when it is not worth the time and trouble for me to sell something, i take it to Habitat For Humanity in Woodside. you can take the tax write off. the panel boxes i tried to give away here a few weeks back, they are already at Habitat.

What size steel beams? Are they I-beams, C-channels, light gauge joists? How long are they?

Thanks. W8’s sounds right but it should be W8 by (a number), for instance W8x28. And you have eighteen 10 foot lengths? It’s possible we may be able to use them in a project. If you can verify the size, I can ask contractors.

Yes 18. My architect said they are 10 feet. Email me at classc199 at a o l dot com.

I emailed you earlier today. I have a contractor who can use them. Please get back to me so I can put you two in touch.
