I second craiglist. If you are willing to travel a bit afar, you might be able to get a deal. We drove to Boston to pick up a new Viking from a family looking to remodel after a gut reno (kitchen wasn’t up to their standards). Great deal.

We spent an inordinate amount of time [years] deciding what type of range we wanted to replace our rusting out Caloric. During that time I saw many high end ones on Craig’s List.

We were initially looking for something to replace a 36″ range, which fit in the hearth of out old-fashioned looking kitchen. There are almost no “regular” ranges in that size except for Premier (too Tinny IMO) and a Kenmore and identical Frigidaire model (which my wife didn’t like).

We considered both American and Italian “restaurant-style” ranges. The former, besides being indecently costly, all had ovens too low to the floor for my wife. The latter all had too many bad reviews and potential parts problems if the distributers were to go out of business. We also considered refurbished late ’40s–early ’50s ranges, which are beautiful, but as costly as high end new stoves. My wife didn’t want to light the oven with a match and it seems that only California models (there were regional brands back then) have pilot lights in the oven. We were on the waiting list of a leading CA refurbisher, but they stopped returning phone messages and emails. I would have liked a refurbished Chambers, but they’re 1.5″ too big for our space.

We ended up with a 30 inch “regular” range, w here there were many more options than for the 36″ size. (a GE because my wife hated stainless steel and liked their metallic gray finish). We had a new cabinet built to fill in the extra space. I initially didn’t want a range with an electronic touch pad, but we actually liked using those in vacation rentals and realized that even if we had to replace them, we could do so, or even replace the entire range, several times over before equalling the cost of a high end range. WE’ve had it over a year, with no problems.

AJ Madison and Drimmer’s, both of which are go-to stores for new appliances, sometimes have floor models they sell at deep discounts. I’d be wary of CL. You just don’t know what you’re buying and, even if you can confirm the stove is working, you don’t know what’s going on inside. A stove is one of the few appliances — a refrigerator — being the other that I’d never buy used. One thing you may want to ask yourself: Is do you really require such a high end item? Many people don’t.
