What to do if plumber does not return

Hi: plumber job 99% complete; needs to have final inspection; plumber giving me all sorts of excuses such as too busy right now to sched appt for inspection; may need to start over since it has been a while when job started; we have been calling him and he does not respond; sometimes he answers phone but does not follow up.

I say this ten times amount on here but vet your tradesman. If they do not have a website, cannot be found online and you cannot get ACTUAL references for their work (permit numbers, addresses, etc. as that is all public knowledge regardless)…well it usually it is not a good idea to move forward with them. REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH CHEAPER THEY ARE (Loud for those in the back).
I mean seriously…I talked to a prospective client about her dog the other day and she told me the crazy requirements/background checks she has for the dog’s groomer and dog walker but then said our company was too expensive and went the un-insured un-licensed quarter cost option.

@Brownstoner, what’s the policy on posting names of negligent contractors? I’m dealing with this same exact thing on at least two jobs. In my experience, it’s been several plumbers who are willing to walk away at the end of a job and demand ridiculously high prices for finishing their work, or just flat out refusing to do so. In at least one case, the plumber was caught certifying other plumbers’ work and had his license suspended. The plumber that did the work obviously couldn’t sign off the work, and the licensed plumber refused to take liability for someone else’s work, even though that’s exactly what he was being paid to do before he got into trouble.

I have to say that I am so sick of dealing with this, and it’s consistently plumbers! I’ve never had this kind of problem with any other sub.

In your position, i would try to request the inspection myself. Doing a quick search on the dob website, owners can request inspections. They mention having to to register for a dob now account and having that account tied to the job. Registering is easy enough, anyone can create an account, you can also just try to call the plumbing/inspection division directly and they can better help you with getting the inspection scheduled. If you do get it scheduled, all you need is the approved dob plumbing plans onsite, the inspector will look through that and do a walk through.

anybody reading this, do not ever fully pay anyone anything until the job is done.

now i will tell all of you this: i have had people pay me for jobs up front or try to pay me the balance due a week before the job is done (and why i do not know). i completely refuse front payments and the last payment is made after the last drop of paint has been cleaned off the glass. i am a contractor. Do you want to know what it feels like to be on a job when someone has paid you the final payment before the job is done? it feels like you are working for free. that is the truth. there has to be a carrot someplace out there to feel good about at the end of the job.

there are people on this board who will know how to get another plumber to come in and get this signed off in. Dibs would know if he would come on here more often, green or dork might know. and the plumbers know.

How much money do you owe this individual? I can tell you he is not going to return. Others on here will advise you how to get another plumber to close this out. I hope you owe the other guy a lot of money and this works out for you because he seems ok walking away.
