What should this mantel even look like?

I have – I think – a slate (possibly soapstone?) fireplace mantel that the previous owners kindly stripped. Thing is it looks horrible. Weird green splotches, gross brown color, dingy overall. Should this be faux marbleized? I really can’t picture what this thing should look like or how I can get it to look the way its supposed to. Does anyone still do faux marbleizing? And does anyone know how to properly spell it? Photos!
