What is the best produce to unclog a bathroom sink?
Hi Everyone,
Need some advice on how to unclog a bathroom sink. It is draining slower than usually. I cant use a snake due to the angle of the pipes. I already tried the bathing soda method.

When I’m talking about a snake, I’m talking about a tool like this:

They make them for under 10 bucks, and up to thousands of dollars depending on this size and length and ease of use. I don’t see that having a problem getting down the ikea drain. However if you don’t have one, it may be easier to remove the drawers and open the trap. Honestly it’s not that hard, a bit annoying perhaps, but you can do it.
If the clog is in the trap, a drain opening agent like pequa might do the job. I myself use drano max gel. They’re all basic the same stuff, sodium hydroxide, a very alkali material that dissolves things. It’s not acidic, and doesn’t react with metal or plastic pipes. I like the gel because it’s heavier than water and will sink to the bottom of the trap even when there is water in the pipe. It may require more than one treatment to clear a stubborn clog, and you can also consider leaving it in the trap overnight. If that doesn’t work, you need to be aware of the possibility of getting exposed to drain cleaner if you are a pro opens the trap to clean it, so make sure you tell anyone who’s going to work on it that you did that.

Sometimes a toilet plunger works great – I just used that on a kitchen sink and a plastic knife that had gotten in there popped out. I’ve used it for a bathroom sink but for that you have to cover the sink vent. (Usually a little slot or hole in the porcelain.) You can do that by holding a wet rag against it. Also make sure the drain is full of water. Once you do that push down the plunger slowly then draw up quickly and the blockage will likely be dislodged.

All – It is an IKEA sink. Very bad design. It is very difficult to take off the draws & reinstall them later to get to the J-pipe under the sink. The plastic snakes that have sharp cutout hooks. The hooks gets stuck in the pipe due to the shape and angel of the pipes.

@Chris Petri, there have certainly been times when I’d like to put a plumber down the drain. But honestly I wouldn’t hire a licensed plumber to do anything that doesn’t require a licensed plumber, because the cost of maintaining the license is astronomical, and that would get passed on to me for clearing a simple drain. Probably would end up costing 300-500 dollars.

See if the trap has a drain plug on it. some of them in some places do. the big old heavy ones.
all snake type devices are a pain in the neck to manipulate around bends, see if you can give it another try. i had to do my shower drain and was about to give up. i got it and now that i have the knack i have done it 3 times since, no issue. Our favorite big box store has a new kind of plastic snake that you turn a little handle on just like the real drain tools. this is a 99 cent item like the plastic snake green mentions. i do not care for it much but it might help you. I just checked – it is called a “Drain Weasel”.
if these pipes are old, buy new ones. also, if the pipes are put together correctly there is no need for that thread tape. though you might want new plastic washers.
when you put these back together, only hand tighten them. a good hand tighten. if you put a tool to them, you might crack the old pipes. this may be more likely to happen in kitchens due to the acidity of foods and such eating the pipes. but it happens.

Is the clog in the trap (the u-shaped pipe under the sink)? It is very easy to unscrew the pipe and clean it out. Make sure you put a bucket underneath so the trapped water doesn’t gush out all over the floor. When you are finished and you put the pipe back together, it is nice to have a little bit of that ribbon-like “pipe dope” to wrap around the threads of the pipe to prevent leaks.

Already tried the washing soda and hot water. The long plastic snakes doesn’t work due to the angle of the pipe. Will try the Pequa Drain Opener next.

The best product I’ve found is Pequa Drain Opener. If you prefer not to use a chemical, you need to remove the J-pipe under the sink. If the clog is in that pipe, just remove it. If it is further down, it should be easy to snake it from the stub in the wall.
