What is the avg cost for re-doing backyard?

Obviously sky is the limit in this town, but if a person wanted to have broken concrete and some small/medium plants ripped out, and bluestone + raised planters put in to a 17×40 yard . . . is that a 5k job? a 10k job? a 20k job? I truly have no range of reference

There are a ton of factors. Are you willing to do parts of it yourself? Have you identified the yard you want (Pintrest, Instagram, magazines, a friend or neighbor with something your like?). Have you looked on the services link here for backyard designers?

There is a certain comfort in hiring someone to handle it all but you got to pay for that. Then you have to think about access into and out of the yard (especially if you have a tenant on the garden level). Then you have to assess for sun/shade. If you want a structure like a pergola sail shade. Then the types of plantings, drainage, the underlayment is a whole nightmare because that is bags and bags of pea gravel sand, drainage pipes, grading before you get to the hard scape. What type of fence? Will you run electrical to light the space or rely on lanterns or candles? Do you want to put in a small outdoor kitchen. Do you just want a Spring through Fall space or a year round space. Seating, cushions. The list is endless.

In my opinion it may be to your advantage to hire a landscape architect to co me out and help you realize your vision (even if you have to pay a small fee for their services). I would start by saving clippings or pins or IG’s of what your like so they have a jumping off point. The price will shock you but find out if you can sweat equity it or break it up into 2 or 3 chunks. BUT, if you have time you can do much of it yourself. For me we had a basic idea of what we wanted and I did things like walk the highline to see what plants I would like and I spent hours talking to the gardeners there who gave such great advice. We put up our own pergola which was actually not too hard and we had tons of yard parties where we had friends help us move earth, put in rail ties for the raised area and then we went up to Vermont to a few nurseries to find year round plantings and put in a few foundational plants that were perennials, attracted butterflies. Sorry to ramble but the point is you can do much yourself or if you want to throw money at it I would plan on $30-$50K for the A-Z. Tell whomever you hire you have 30 and go from there. If your budget is not in that area then decide what you can do and start there. Good luck.

currently doing mine in a much smaller space and managing the project myself but just a 10 yd dumpster to dispose of concrete for THAT size starts at $1200 before accounting for weight of concrete. i’m using friends of friends and agree with xchx but i think you’d be lucky to do it for 10k

To put in pavers right, you have to dig out a couple inches. Disposing of that dirt is way more work than you’d expect, especially if everything has to be carried through the house. Probably looking at 3k for demo/trash disposal. then another couple thousand for the materials for the new patio. then whatever the guy charges to install it. (only takes a couple days) then the raised planters are expensive but you can just buy them yourself. I would say $10k budget for the whole thing if you are basically your own “general contractor” and just hire laborers yourself

What you describe is probably $20-25k.

Are you doing a fence? If so, add another $5-15k depending on materials and design.

Any plumbing or electrical work?

That will entirely depend on the design, including the amount of bluestone required. I got quotes on getting a 12 x 15 bluestone patio with path and it was about 10k (with limited demo work needed). A raised bed section with smaller patio added would have increased the cost another 10k.
