What is ballpark cost to remove a three foot asbestos pipe cover?

Hello, an inspection revealed a single pipe cover in our basement that is likely asbestos. Does anyone have ballpark estimates on how much this usually costs to have removed? Just trying to get a sense of things.

I would have to check the laws and talk to a disposal site. it may be possible that a homeowner or small contractor can pay to dispose of a 10 lb bag of the stuff. I cannot see the city allow us to remove a 10 ft linear section of the stuff and then expect us to dump it in the trash.

Homeowners should understand that it can be encapsulated.

the “temperature” about having this in the house or even handling it once or twice is way too high. men like me have been exposed to this stuff occasionally (once a year, twice a year for me) for decades and we are ok. does that mean i would let my son work near me if i might accidently break a piece of it off? no, absolutely not. does that mean i would want a customer being exposed to it as i do a home inspection? no, absolutely not.

people should keep in mind, that until a few years ago, we had asbestos lined brake shoes. when i took power mechanics in high school, we were told “do not use a dust gun to blow the dust out of brake drums because that dust contains asbestos”. when i took a class in building management over two decades ago, we were told “the way to see if there is an asbestos problem in a building; they test the air outside to see how much asbestos is in the air from the brake shoes and then they test it in the building. if the air inside the building has more asbestos in it than the air outside, the building has an asbestos problem”.

i am busy this weekend. next week i will read the laws (for nyc) and see if there is a nearby disposal site. there is one upstate because we had some removed in a building in the bronx and that is where it went.

Steve—if you take it off yourself ( which is what I’d be tempted to do) how do you dispose of the asbestos?
FWIW I have a heating duct running through my ground floor pantry (original—1899, leading to the large floor register on my parlor floor) covered in cloth wrapped insulation. I have no idea if it’s anything dangerous, (a d don’t want to know) but I encapsulated it quite neatly by brushing on the sort of rubbery liquid that’s used for stopping plumbing leaks.

so the last time i checked, maybe 4 years ago, a small amount of asbestos had not been considered and “asbestos job” and was legal to remove without a licensed team (in NYC; upstate homeowners can remove as much of this they want themselves). i might check code later to reconfirm that (they keep changing the laws). if it does not require a license, i might offer to remove it for you. It would be less than what a specialist MUST get (even if this does not meet the legal need for a licensed person, they will still base their price on their overhead). if it were in my house, i would cut it off dry, without a mask on. In someone else’s house, i would soak it thoroughly and keep it wet. i have removed plenty of the stuff over the year in small amounts.

i hope you used a licensed inspector. i was on a job a few months back and they had a contractor walking around on the property with a family member at the same time i was doing the home inspection and he scared the crap out of the buyers and told them they had asbestos on all sorts of pipes. When i checked all the pipes, it turned out MOST of what he had been talking about was modern, paper wrapped fiberglass.

if you are interested, LMK and i will check the laws. i will not touch this if it is illegal though.

FWIW, when I looked into it years ago, most asbestos remediation companies had a minimum of $2,000. So they could remove the pipe cover and other things as well if you have anything else for their $2,000 minimum.
