Here’s the NYTimes article about how and why the museum is trying to broaden their mission and consider how all people “become American.” A slightly different take than the opinion piece from the Post/Spectator. While the former volunteer complains about talking about people who weren’t “in the room” (Blacks and Bangladeshis), the museum staff and management say that the goal of the museum is to present the story of new Americans whether or not they are in a specific room. The museum sees its role as bigger than being a house museum telling a few stories. I used to love the Post when I was in college (early’60s). I would keep the pull-out l editorial/opinion section and throw out the rest. Back then it was a left-liberal rag, but a rag nevertheless.

randolph, peope buy the post BECAUSE it is TRASH. if it was anything but that it would languish on the shelves.

is the NYP published by someone from the UK? they have these trashy papers over there in england. the english papers tended to do well because of what they put on page 3.

Tinker…..even above The Post, my favorite is always The Daily Mail. People may not like them but if you Like them on FB, you get stories well before the rest of the media posts them!!! This whole cancel culture about what media outlets are “right” and which are not is all rather ridiculous. Like I said above, the NY Times is no longer what it once was most especially what comes through their opinion “pages” which nowadays are basically opinions by out of work freelancers. i am glad you are putting thought to all this and i have a comment about what that museum charges to get in its doors. it betrays what museums once stood for and my impoverished brooklyn and lower manhattan german ancestors (we are talking poor; the amount of infant deaths due to malnutrition i found in archives in successive generations) would not have been able to afford near the 1860’s dollar equivalent of the admission cost. i have not read the article yet and maybe i should not but when i went to the door of that museum i felt they betrayed who we were and who we are as a country. i felt as though it was a for profit private venture.

dibs, i just now read the article. in my reply above i share my displeasure for their pricing and i state that “i felt as though it was a for profit private venture”. what you posted only reinforces that feeling. any museum that would bend historical accuracy to be more inclusive sounds like they are aiming to please only to shore up the bottom line.

but who knows. maybe they are on to something? maybe they will find one of my Polish ancestors buried in the African burial ground or find out one was wearing a head dress at the battle of wounded knee? overly optimistic maybe but no entirely impossible.

Steve–My experience with the Post indeed predates it’s transition from left wing rag to far right rag, but a rag it’s always been. Maybe it was different when Alexander Hamilton was involved.
