Weed smoke permeates our home from the home next door.
We live in a row house in Bushwick and two if not three of the apartments in the home next door consistently smoke weed throughout the day and night. The smell permeates the walls and invades our personal space daily. It’s a big issue for us because we have two small children. I could care less what they do inside their homes, but when it infiltrates our space something has to be done.
These neighbors are not the type to stop their lifestyle habits over our requests to stop so asking them to be mindful doesn’t seem a viable option. The home has been a problem home since the day we moved it. If it’s not the burning herb, it’s the loud screaming drunken rages, or booming bass. It never end and we feel completely powerless over it.
Anyone have experience dealing with weed smoke permeating an interior wall? We’ve removed every faceplate, mirror, outlet covers, drawers, light, and vent, caulking over every visible space or crack, but it still gets in. HELP!!!!!
Thanks everyone,
Whalien

@nicolemull – I’m laminating the brick with drywall. Meaning I’m not using studs. So I’m using a mortar paste that’s adhering to bot materials. I’m not sealing the brick. I wanted to but I had too much existing plaster that I would have to remove and I was concerned about dust smell and noise. Sorry if I implied I was sealing the brick and leaving it exposed.

@panda — you mentioned you are laminating your walls, what are you using. We have exposed brick that despite numerous coats of water based sealer still crumbles. It has been repointed and still dust and itty bitty pieces of mortar sheds off. What kind of product are you using?

I’m sorry to hear about this very unpleasant situation. Even if you don’t live in a flip, and all the plaster is intact, in my experience, smoke and noise travel between row houses.

Our home is a gut flip and they didn’t insulate the interior walls. Surprise! Not really, be skeptical of any gut reno. Corner cutting is their speciality.

We had that issue, its awful. It only started after a developer renovated and exposed brick. Thankfully those tenants moved after one year and it is rented to a family, so no weed for now. I almost took the baseboards out to start sealing along the walls. My tenants almost moved, they have young kids. I’m concerned for the future, I can’t afford to do gut reno in the hopes that I can seal the hole house.

@mozeeatupu double sheetrock barely does anything. We did that in our ceiling. I would be weary of posting suggestions like that on here. Someone might actually think it works. Even adding a layer of Greenglue between the sheets didn’t help.

Owner lives in bottom unit. Problematic tenants are in first floor unit, but we think they second floor unit are also big weed folk. Owner also owned the adjoining home next to his, but recently lost that home to the bank. It feels like a very unmanageable situation on that side of our home.

Does the owner live on the premises? Or is he absentee?
Do you know the other neighbors in the building or on the other side of them?

I have to agree with you @boolsgolden. We’ve had numerous chats with the owner about the noise. His response has been call 411. He’s semi-washed his hands. My wife went over the other night to request they keep it down and they were so drunk, it was boarder line dangerous. I don’t think discussion is a viable option here. They’re not exactly open to change or receptive to being neighborly. I thought this article was interesting:

Hey whalien — sorry you’re going through this —
There are many who say that just talking to the neighbor will make everything ok but in my experience it has backfired as often as it has worked. For example, we have neighbors who sustained property damage because other neighbors thought she called the cops on them (she didn’t) — solely because she had talked to them in the past about their behavior. So do your own calculation first.
But IF you are going to “talk” to them I’d at least do it in person. I know a bunch of people who have left notes and there’s something about them that seem to put people on the defensive. They’ve often made things worse.
In case you’re thinking the note will somehow be “anonymous” it won’t be, since they all know you just moved in and will assume automatically it is you.

@panda10, thanks for weighing in. We completely soundproofed the two bedrooms facing the stated home. It’s helped, but is no match for bass. Bass is relentless. When we first removed the drywall the stench coming off the brick (interior wall) was incredibly potent. Drywall does nothing for soundproofing.
I agree, talking to the neighbors is always a good option.

No experience specifically with your issue, but I’m doing a reno now and once we exposed some brick along the party wall, we noticed way more noise. I’ve read that due to the porous nature of the brick and mortar, you will always hear (and even smell) what is happening on the other side. I’m not leaving my brick exposed thankfully so once new drywall goes back up I’m hoping most of the smell/noise goes back to what we had before. If the drywall is hollow behind your wall, you have limited options. I’m laminating my walls (there is lots of existing plaster) so it will/should create a seal. I know you said you feel powerless, but I would still write a handwritten note without asking them to do anything specific, but just to share what you’re going through. I really do find when neighbors are approached in a real way the response is usually positive and you don’t have anything to lose here. If you want to keep going along the lines of what you’re doing (air sealing) you really should call a soundproofing company. You need to wrap each outlet box, remove the molding and c halk between drywall and ceiling/floor because any tiny opening will really make it seem like not much was done at all. Good luck.
