I tested my new home for lead in the water since we have a lead water main, and made the unpleasant discover that we do have low levels in our home. Being that I have small children, I’d like to quickly find someone who can do whatever is needed to make the water completely and permanently safe, likely replacing the main and service line (added bonus here is that it should dramatically increase my water pressure to do so anyway).

Does anyone have any recommendations for who to use or stay away from for this kind of work in Brooklyn? I’ve seen older posts on this, but people didn’t name the bad or recommended companies for some reason, which is not helpful.

Any ballpark estimates on what you’ve seen cost wise would also be helpful if you can provide, though I do think I’ve seen $3500-5000 quoted in older posts about similar topics.

Thanks!

Balkan should be able to do it. They were amazing and beat most of the other estimates we found. They had to replace out entire sewer line all the way out to the street from our basement. Engineering feat like no other. I’m almost certain they would also do the water. Ask to speak to Frank Marte. He was very helpful.

Lots of factors to take into account. Is the city main on the same side of the street as you, is there a tree, how deep is your front yard/sidewalk? $3500 to 7500 range is within reason. NO ONE will beat Balkan’s prices, no one.

Low levels of lead are not dangerous. I’d wait to replace it until it breaks. There’s a lot of old lead mains out there.

I did let the water run when I tested, and I know I have a lead main and service line, so it is what it is. The level of lead is at 3 or 4 PPM, which is below 5PPM (where there is heightened risk), but I don’t really want to play games with it given that I have toddlers in the house. I’m going to try Balkan for sure, really appreciate the help.

Has anyone ever gone the route of installing a whole home filter instead? Wondering if there are alternatives I’m not familiar with.

Balkan might be the cheapest (we used them when our line needed to be replaced all the way out to the street), but they were incredibly, painfully slow. There was a lot of one-guy-actively-working-four-guys-watching going on. It was infuriating.

Replace your lead main soon, if you can afford it. I’m normally in the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” camp, but yers ago we had to replace our water main on an emergency basis when it started to leak and it wasn’t a pleasant experience. Our next door neighbor called the City because water was bubbling up iin the street in front of their house. The DEP workers excavated to shut off their main, but it turned out to be our’s–water mains run at an angle on our block. The workers told us how to temporarily connect to a neighbor’s water, via a garded hose, so that we’d have water while waiting for a repair. That wouldn’t even have been possible had it been winter. It also cost us an extra $500 charge from the City. We were unable to get estimates and had to use the first plumber we called. We used Figliolia, on a neighbor’s recommendation, and they did a fine job, but still….

Lead mains have a finite life span and yours is probably working on borrowed time (our mai n went back when our house was about 90 years old) , so I’d advise getting estimates over the next few weeks, or months.

Also try Harris Water Main. I don’t know their costs but I’ve seen their work a few times. They show up early with all the right equipment, they work hard and finish the same day even if they stay until 9pm.

I think unless you have the political power to change every pipe from your home to whatever resivoir and water station that feeds your line, you will end up with lead in the water. For the prices detailed above, is it really worth the expense? I would only replace the main if it is showing to be corroded or impacting the foundation of the house.

Replace it. Water is fed from the reservoirs via concrete, steel, or cast iron pipes. The only place lead is found is the service line to your house.
Expect to pay 4-5k, it’s only a 1 day job, (they will come back and do the permanent street and sidewalk repair).

We discovered lead in our water when our pediatrician told us our baby’s lead levels were alarmingly high so we changed out the main immediately and the difference was immediate. Have you had your kids checked? I’d consider starting there.

Harris water main . Nice guys. The worst part was blocking off parking spots for them to dig.

Can someone tell me what is the “service line” and what is the “main”? I always understood the “service line” was the home owner’s responsibility from the inside meter out to and including the connection to the city’s “main line”.

The services line is your connection to the city water line. The city water line runs parallel to the street, the service line is perpendicular to it.

Does anyone know whether old pipes in a building can affect lead levels. I live in a building that was constructed in 1920 and I’m told that the presence of original pipes would make it impossible to completely eradicate lead. I tested our water and it’s 2 ppm so I’m not that concerned though I plan to filter my water in the future.

$3500-$5000 sounds is a really low estimate. The main factor in how much it will cost is how far they have to dig. That depends on how far set back your house is from the street, and more importantly whether you have a curb valve on the sidewalk in front of your house or not. (see picture here: http://defendingdissent.info/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/curb-valve-box-water-main-valve-key-photo-4-photos-curb-box.jpg ) If you do, then $4000-$8000 might cut it because they only have to replace the line from the curb valve to your house. If not, then they might have to dig all the way to the other side of the street to replace the service line to the main. The cost might go up to $7000-$12000.

In the case of my house, there was no curb valve. We ended up getting an $80 GE filter and my children’s lead levels have been absolutely fine ever since.

I recently read an article where NYC is going to require all homes to upgrade their lead water service as a requirement by 2020. For this reason I would suggest replacing it ahead of time and reducing any potential risk with lead.
I too have used Harris Water Main who seem to be the top company in Brooklyn/Queens and have always been fair with pricing

I recently had my lead water main replaced due to a 3 day notice issued by DEP because my pipe was leaking in the street. Due to the fact it was lead I really wasn’t mad about as I knew this was something I should have upgraded years ago and figured the cost will only go up as time goes on. I used Harris Water & Sewer after seeing them work in the neighborhood for decades. As anticipated, they did a great job and I no longer had a lead pipe feeding my house! I would certainly suggest upgrading the water line to copper
