water leak

I noticed a small amount of water in basement; how do i find out where it is coming from; one contractor said its coming from under ground and it needs to have a french drain and new cement floor

who do i cll to find out if water is coming from under floor or from other places

It’s very hard to say where water leaks come from. We had damp spots on the floor when it rained. Our neighbor to one side replaced their roof, and the leaks stopped.

Is your basement finished? Many years ago we had to redo our finished basement and it was only when the basement was demo’d and all drywall removed, that on a rainy night we saw water pouring in through the actual foundation walls, where the mortar had badly deteriorated. As the other poster laid out, we had the exterior of the foundation waterproofed. That involved excavating outside. Making matters more challenging is that area outside the foundation is paved. But the crew we hired got it all done in three days and it fully resolved the issue.

you can call a water leak consultant who represents you and not some other firm. BUT, repairing these leaks in the cellar of these old houses is challenging. the best way to do this is to have POSITIVE side water proofing put on the OUTSIDE of the foundation. Negative side waterproofing, the application of liquid membranes, will work to some degree but they also fail at some point and need maintenance.

i do inspect roofs and upper walls for water leaks and i suppose i could investigate cellars but with the cellars, there are so many possible points of entry that it could be a little more challenging and we may have to “guess” at something and could miss the mark. even with roofs and upper walls, we often find multiple entry point and have to tell customer to repair “all of these and one of them will be it”.
