WallPaper in Brownstone
Removal wallpaper: What is the effort involved in removing wall paper and painting. Is it a huge expense and it does involve re-plastering etc. Would it be cheaper to put new wall paper overold

Yes, although a lot of it had deteriorated so much that it looked like an old brown paper bag. There was beautiful , but heavily damaged, green silk under the wallpaper in our front parlor. Wall paper removal solutio wouldn’t penetrate it and a scraper just skiddded on the smooth surface. We painted over it and the stuff mostly held the wall together for a long time until we could finally have that room skim coated. One of the best things is that there couldn’t have been any lead paint.

Our house had never been painted when we bought it and seemed to have been wallpapered with no primer or sizing over the plaster. The plaster was in pretty bad shape underneath and we;ve been skim-coating, in stages, over many years, or ;aminating thin sheet rock in secondary rooms.

We had some wallpaper that was difficult to remove in an entry. We hired an experienced wood stripper who has done a lot of stripping for us, and she had it off in a jiffy. The cost was negligible. The underlying plaster seems solid though it does have scratches in it after the removal. If memory serves, the stripper used liquid dish soap to get it off.

My husband recently painted over wallpaper in our kitchen. We hung the wallpaper ourselves 25 years ago, and apparently did not prime properly over new sheetrock, when he tried to remove it, it pulled sheetrock with it. He used a special primer (two coats) and painted , (two coats). looks fantastic, no sign of the wallpaper thru paint. have to sand any seams really well before applying primer. OTOH I had the wonderful experience of painting over wallpaper that was very resistant to being scraped off. I painted over it with stain-killing shellac-based primer and watched in amazement as it slid off the walls in whole sheets. WHAT A MESS!

And I have painted over wallpaper with good results. If there are any lifting edges, they need to be cut away first. Then, roll a coat of shellac on to seal the paper from any water based paints or repairs. Then level those cut away edges with drywall compound. Prime and paint.

It depends on the material & what was used to hang it. I stripped 4 walls – 2 were relatively easy & 2 were absolute bears. I agree w/ DIBS that papering over will look awful unless the wall is incredibly well prepped.

Assuming it’s old and not newer strippable wallpaper (which would be relatively easy to remove), it’s still not that difficult to remove and will actually be rather easy IF the underlying plaster is firm and intact. You could paper over it but only if it’s in perfect shape and expertly hung.

Definitely, defintiely cheaper to put new wallpaper over it. There’s different methods of removing wallpaper that you can google, but chances are you’ll have to re-plaster/skim. It’s just not going to look right otherwise.
