Wall hung toilet - installation issue

Hi all, we have an issue with the installation of a wall-mounted Toto toilet. The bowl is resting on the tile floor but also seemingly supported by the wall – you can see that the trap is clearly sitting on the floor. I tried slipping a piece of paper underneath it and it won’t go. I can lift the bowl a tiny bit but when I let it go it falls back onto the floor. My contractor said the tile raised higher than he anticipated after installing the radiant heating, but the bowl touching the floor shouldn’t be an issue even though it’s lower than Toto’s minimum height of 15″. However, I still don’t think any weight should bear on this small point and it seems likely to crack at some point in the future. I called Toto and they said the only way it would break is if a 200-300 pound force came down on it, which doesn’t seem completely unrealistic considering we do know people who weigh 200+. The contractor did offer to redo it but mentioned that we would have to pay for more of the expensive tile that would need to be replaced after raising the carriage. Thoughts? TIA for your input (and sorry about the toilet photo for those sensitive ones) [Toto wall hung](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:cd4P:totowallhung.jpg.jpg)

For the modern age it’s really compatible to use a normal flushing toilet but wall mounted toilet for me not the solution anyway. I just emphasize to the hygiene before any other issue and for that I found bidet toilet combo the best of them. Toto is the name I am going to share with you. The benefits of wall hung toilets may depend on circumstances. Many prefer the modern aesthetics, and the ease of cleaning. But the practical benefit may be more important — because it discharges at wall height, it may create greater placement options and further away from the plumbing stack. But it generally requires a 2×6 reinforced wall, simple repairs are not as simple, and, in general, materially more money. I have the Toto Ultramax you reference in my apartment and weekend home. It does what it is supposed to do, and does it well. I prefer the Toto models that have a solid skirt (again for ease of cleaning), which I also have

“Once you fit it in your bathroom, you can forget about acquiring a new toilet in the near future as most of them last for at least 10 years.” 10 YEARS? My main bathroom has a c. 1899 S.C. Johnson toilet that still works fine (with occasional replacement of the inner flushing mechanism). However I don’t mean to knock Toto products. We have the cheapest “Entrada” model in another bathroom and it works fine (and uses much less water than the attractive, but wasteful antique).

I am not sure what is the main benefit of the wall-hung toilet. I am researching this topic. Because I am going to remodeling my bathroom very soon. Just one question here. What do you think about Toto ultramax ii toilet https://bestflushingtoilet.org/toto-toilets/toto-ultramax-ii-review/ ? If i buy normal toilet, then I am thinking to buy this.

I am only 5′ tall so 18″ high would actually be uncomfortable for me to use but I do agree it needs to be raised for others who use it. Personally I like a balance of form and function. Standard procedure is to remove the bowl before raising the carriage. Thanks for the link!

If you decide to raise the toilet, as you should, please set it at 18″, the minimum recommended is by no means comfortable. Also you will have another opportunity to reinforce the carriage support, it is not normal that you can move it.

Removing placed tile is always risky for adjacent sanitary pieces, is it possible to detach the w/c prior to removing the tile? I agree regarding height as the most important factor, form after function!

Jorge, good point but as of now the bowl top is about 1/2″ from the grout joint so it doesn’t align perfectly anyway. Also it seems everyone is more concerned about the height comfort-wise rather than possible damage to the bowl. Any thoughts on possible damage?

Hello there, be aware when you raise the bowl its top will not align with the tile joints as does now, which is nice. Modifying tile layout will go all the way to the sink corner wall, not good. Best option is to loose bowl’s top and tile match.

Agree with resident2 – but even on your own dime raise that up to the proper height (comfort height?).Looks like Heath tiles – if you are treating yourself to those then you should not settle for a toilet that is too low. I was shooting for comfort height with mine, and like yours because of failing to account for floor thickness it is lower than I wanted. Now that I think of it, I should get around to raising it up – I’ve only got the sheetrock stopping me.

For those like me at 6’2″, and now over 50 with bad knees, even a “normal” toilet is not particularly pleasant to negotiate. We put ADA height toilets in all bathrooms in two renovations, including one wall hung. I suggest you fix it now. To those who care, that will stick out like a sore thumb.

Yes, we specified the height we wanted and the toilet bowl was here when they installed the carriage and floor tile. The contractor admitted that the bowl height was something he lost track of when the flooring was installed which was done after the carriage installation. DIBS and resident2 – thanks for confirming my intuition. The toilet is now 14-3/8″ above the floor so my contractor suggested it wasn’t too far off the minimum height. Still, I am very petite and it feels even low for me. This issue would really be a pain to correct in the future and even though it’s his fault, I might end up just paying for the tile myself to keep him motivated to finish the rest of the work.

If your contractor & plumber knew in advance of starting all the roughing etc. what model toilet you were using. It is their mistake & they need to correct it, at their expense.
You not only need to be concerned with if the toilet is touching the floor but for tall people to have to squat that much lower to sit on it is really a pain!

Maybe a small inconspicuous rubber cushion under it? A large, heavy washer might do the trick. It may never be an issue so maybe just wait to tear it all up if it ever is (although that would necessitate replacing the toilet šŸ™ )? But if he’s willing to do it just for the cost of the tile, I’d go that route. If it’s cheaper than the cost of a new replacement toilet especially.

Hey
On attached picture is wall hanged toilet made by Geberit . I’m using double 2×6 on each side as well 2×6 bottom and top plates.
This carriage is ajustble up to 2ā€ . So in your case contractor miscalculated floor thickens and never confirmed toilet height with you. [6C7C5EFB-7857-4B37-8CD2-2600B6D2DFCE](6c7c5efb78b574b378cd22600b6d2dfce.jpeg)
