I live in a 10-unit coop and we have a washer and dryer in the basement. We currently lease the machines for a total of about $65 a month and the company provides service when needed. The service is generally terrible given we’re hardly a big account for the w/d company. So we were thinking. . . would it make more financial sense for us to purchase a w/d outright? I mean $65 per month x infinity is a lot. p.s.: These units are used by only a few owners as several have w/d in their own apts. Thoughts? Thanks.

I’ve been reliably told by appliance dealers that the expected life on new units is about 7 years. Do the math w/ what costs of new ones would be vs. what you’re paying now.

If you do buy them, get mechanical controls, not electronic touch pads. Much cheaper to repair if something goes wrong. Probably cheaper initial purchase too.

I would add that it is worth buying the 5-year service contract to extend the warranty. While I agree with Dave, it is harder than it used to be to find quality washers with manual controls.

That makes sense. 10 households sharing one w/d is a lot of usage. A consumer product may not hold up for long with that kind of usage.

“Consumer washer and dryers void the warranty if used in commercial manner” True. GE won’t warranty a standard water heater in a two family.

If consumer machines are cheapeenough it might make sense to forget about the warranty and just pay for any repairs, replacing the washer or dryer wheniit’s toofar gone
