venting an unused fireplace
2 of the 3 fireplaces on one chimney have been sealed – do I need to vent the chimney on? one contractor wants to do two goosenecks, one contractor a raised vent over all three flues, one contractor said don’t bother venting – 2 of the flues sealed – one a homemade can and pipe/vent – thanks

Actually this is a good time/reminder to do a “contractor recommendation post”
We needed to replace our boiler last year at the start of winter and as part of this we had to get our chimney lined with an 8″ stainless steel “super flex lining” and had them put a new cement cap on 3 of the 4 un-used chimneys.
Anyway i was down in the basement a few weeks ago as part of the plumbers doing the annual inspection and we did a “clean out” of the new chimney lining box – absolutely perfect, all the concreting of the lower access panels etc looked like the day it was installed and on the roof removing the top cap to do a visual inspection apart from some color changes…..looked like the day they installed it even though a year old.
If you are looking to cap or line your chimney i highly recommend

ok, this is what i think the person is saying. if you have the fire places sealed on the bottom, would you close the flues on the top? i would cap the flues. you don’t need water or things falling down there. its not like you have to cap them tomorrow, but i would plan on capping them. i saw someone use a sheet metal cap one time so it was not permanent.

Please rephrase your question. Are you trying to use one of the three fireplaces? And for what? A gas unit? Wood fires? Don’t rely on “contractors.” Get a chimney specialist if you want to reline a flue.

If a fireplace is sealed up do I still need to vent the flue? or seal the flue as well?
