Using roof for storage?

We have a small deck on our roof. I have thought about utilizing the other space up there and wonder if anyone has ever put a storage shed on the roof? I wonder first of all about the weight and if that would damage the roof. I also feel like it would need to be secured somehow. My ultimate dream would be a rooftop she-shed. Haha. Anyone done this?

Well if you wanted to do this with permits etc, it would be a nightmare and most likely impossible unless it was filed as a rooftop addition, in which case you’d have all sorts of problems not worth it for a she shed. What about just doing it until you get a violation? Well I wouldnt put an un-anchored shed on my roof. It’s windy up there, and what if it ends up coming down, or landing on the neighbors yard. To anchor it you’d need to penetrate the roof surface and properly seal it, and for sure it wouldn’t be up to fire code for the same reason minisplit condensors can’t go there. One place that could be considered for this structure might be the roof deck. An unnattached shed might be legal here, I don’t know. The shed could be anchored to the deck structure, which would probably not be up to code, but I would prefer not to have a loose shed on the roof.
