TR1s for backyard deck -- Typical requirements?

The DOB requires more and more SIA inspections every year, particularly for structural work, and especially for decks (see long sad history of NYC decks collapsing during parties causing fatalities). Your deck will almost certainly end up being orders of magnitude more structurally sound than your house.

Hi there. I filed for a standard 8 by 20 metal deck and got my plans approved and the work was scheduled to begin this week. I’m using a steel fabricator who was highly recommended on this very forum, but I am running into problems because the plans call for multiple TR1s — welding, bolting, and post-installed anchors. The steel fabricator is saying that the plans he works with don’t typically include these TR1s and he doesn’t normally use DOB-licensed welders and usually the architect just signs off on them.I used a friend who is a structural engineer and works on skyscrapers to draw the plans for me and he’s not licensed for these inspections and is unwilling to sign off on them. So the question is where to refile the job using an architect that this fabricator normally works with and is willing to sign off or to use an independent inspector and hope that the work meets the requirements and he will sign off. To complicate things further, I didn’t realize that I was the person who had to pull the permit, so now I’m scrambling to get it and have to sort out the TR1 question, so they can continue working.

I assume you are talking about SIA Special Inspections? You can find another structural engineer or a firm like EZTR1 to take on the special inspections. No need to refile other than to change the SIA responsibility.

Thanks for answering JPDA. I am wondering how common it is when building your standard steel deck to require multiple special inspections? My engineer filed professional certification and one architect I spoke to recommended refiling with self-certification.

They are two different things. Self certification is to get the job application approved quickly without DOB review. You still need the special inspections during construction.
