The Contractor of the Architect -- good idea?

Trust your architect if you are 100% sure he is an amazing architect with lots of experience and not a pretentious wannabe artist

it would make the most sense to hire an architect a contractor recommends.
Because they are the ones who know if their work make sense.
But for logical reasons it never happens that way around 🙂

Having said that – always get your own opinion about the contractor and maybe compare with some offers. You pay, and no one else. So you are the only one to blame for a bad choice of contractor

Is there any conflict-of-interest concerns that you would have? Or are such fears overblown?

I think it’s a good idea. The architect likely wants similar things to you–the job to be done well and go smoothly. If he or she doesn’t expect that with a contractor, why would they want to put themselves through working with them and making themselves look bad to you? Also, they have likely worked out some of the kinks of communication and how they do things, and that could make things progress more quickly than having people who haven’t worked together and aren’t always on the same page.

My preference is for some distance between architect and GC, particularly if there is structural work. You want the architect to look at the GC’s work critically. Easy for corners to be cut if architect and GC are too close and architect decides to trust the GC’s work without kicking the tires here and there.

From my experience it is always better to work with a whole team that have worked together before; have some degree of trust in each other and a spirit of good faith.
If you go into a project with doubts, distrust and bad faith in your your team, (and that goes from the top down, you the client to the guy that sweeps up behind everyone) You will have a difficult job.

We hired the contractor our architects recommended, and we couldn’t be happier with our decision. The whole team works together very smoothly and everyone is really excellent.
