The front door to our brownstone is a heavy metal fireproof door, which was installed years ago by the previous owner. We really want to replace the door and install one with a glass panel that lets in light. Several contractors/handymen who have looked at the door remarked that the door frame is a very unusual size, and it would be easier to cut a panel and install a window in the current door rather than making a custom door to fit the odd-sized frame. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations ? Thank you!

But, you’d still have an ugly metal door, which, I suppose, is OK if you like it. It’s possible that the door frame was changed to accommodate the fireproof door. Perhaps it could be changed again to fit one, or a pair, of salvage doors?

Just install a whole new door frame too.

The thing that stands out to me from the OP’s post is that the contractors/handymen said “it would be easier” to cut a panel and install a window. Having lived in a brownstone for all of my 63 years, this translates to me as “I’m not interested in the job.” I would continue looking and perhaps checking out some of the companies who build brownstone doors or someone who would use salvage doors and build an entirely new door frame. That’s what I would do assuming the budget allows. Good luck.

I agree with @mab. I also think this could be an expensive job if the opening is an odd size and custom doors are required. I have heard good things about these guys: http://www.thetinkerswagon.com/. I need to replace the ugly wood slab front door on my house with replicas of the original doors (which are still on many of the houses in my row), and plan to call these guys. From what I understand though, it could be a ~$10,000 job.

We hate the ugly metal door… The 2 contractors who looked at it explained that the door frame is set in cement, and to replace the door frame would be a big, involved job. Any recommendations for someone to make a custom door?

If it’s set in cement it WOULD be a big job, but you might want to consult a mason who restores brownstone facades, rather than a general contractor. Perhaps the cost of restoring the frame to it’s original (probably larger) size and fitting a pair of salvage doors might not be all that much more than getting a new custom door made. It would almost certainly be more appropriate to the house and better looking.

I have friends who did this. They drilled holes in the door in a geometric pattern. The holes were about 2 inches in diameter. They must have covered the back with plexiglass or something. The pattern was like a giant triangle. It came out quite cool! Not appropriate to your house, but you’d be the artiest one on the block.

Unfortunately it does sound like a big job. If removing the door involves messing with the facade you need a person to fix that. After all the work to get the old door out sounds like you still need to reframe and get a new door. Good luck.
