Hi all. I’m considering leaving the suburbs to settle into Park Slope. I have one child that’s school-age and one that is a year old. My husband’s work situation has changed, and it’s easier for us to live in the city now. I know we’ll obviously sacrifice on space and I have a good handle on the schools situation (thanks to Joyce Szuflita), but I’m curious about neighborhood safety. Would anyone think twice about bringing young children to any part of Park Slope or South Slope? It seems like a generally safe area, but are there any parts of the neighborhood you feel unsafe? (Even if it’s a part of a street or Avenue.)

Also, does anyone know another family that did this backward sort of move? Starting in the suburbs, then moving back to the city with their kids.

I see you’ve done your research!
In the meanwhile, do watch out for the crack denizens who inhabit that half-block on 12th between Z & Y (I’m protecting the innocent,) and NEVER go near the Armory after 6pm. Pizza parlors have been known to harbor pedophiles who prey on the PS321 school kids who eat there (we tried desperately to stop the school from allowing kids out, especially since the school lunch got such raves,) so I’d hang out at lunch to keep an eye out.

Not sure if cmu is kidding. It’s the City, not the suburbs, but south slope is pretty tame as City nabes go. With young kids, if you are coming home by subway on the F at night, you may want to get off at 7th rather than 4th ave.

Your best bet is to walk around the hood at night and see for yourself.
