Stud spacing behind old plaster&lathe?

Steve just reminded me that the spacing you SHOULDN’T expect to find is 16″, not 18″. In any case, don’t necessarily expect anything standard.

Hi, I haven’t had much luck with stud finders on plaster. Wondering if anyone has insight on what spacing of studs might be behind plaster for the interior, central load bearing beam, wall in an 1890s brownstone? I’ll certainly confirm with a drill, but hoping for a rough guide to minimize holes in the wall.

Don’t count on it being 18”.

I use a zircon stud finder in my own 1928 house. It works better than expected. Be sure to move these slowly over the wall and when it indicates a stud, go across the stud and make your markings. Then do it again a few inches down below and mark again and back up over it to confirm.
