For smaller jobs: ASE Engineering PLLC’s Alon Egozi,PE. 646-841-4477. Eric Madsen is a wonderful structural engineer but mainly schedules with larger jobs now. Both are associates of “The Sketch & Hammer Deck Contracting & JonPaul Architectural Design Team”– and all are “Brooklyn Friendly” based businesses. Good Luck!

Ugh, how do I make this long story short- The building next to ours got sold last year and is going through a gut renovation. As they took the Plaster off the walls, they noticed major cracking in the Party Walls on both sides, and after getting their own structural engineer in, they found the facade of their building on the 2 upper floors ( 4 story Brownstone) is not anchored to the framing of the building anymore. They suspect the condition is the same/ similar on either side (mine being one). Their work has halted while they temporarily stabilize their facade so they can begin permanent stabilization. I need an engineer to check my party walls and facade out as soon as possible. I have their structural engineers’ document describing the condition, and once I have enlisted someone, they can go in and check out what’s happening on their side, and then we have to go from there to check our place out. I would rather get a recommendation from someone who has used someone they trust, rather than just looking engineers up online. Thanks for any help!

You’ll need to contact more than one in my opinion as people tend to be busy in the summer. An engineer (not on this list) came highly recommended but I found their communication poor so it’s important that you feel comfortable… plus always good to have a backup. These are all engineers that I spoke to and have been recommended here before. I thought they were all really sound.

Anytime. Yes the shear force can cause the sides to pull away. One has to be careful when doing any kind of structural work in an attached building. I didn’t want to cause any problems for the neighbors or issues in my own house. Better safe than sorry.

Its always good practice to have an independent engineer and/or surveying company monitor your property in situations like this. An engineer can advise you of potential issues and remedies required and a surveyor can install monitoring devices to track any potential settlement or shifting after a base measurement is established.

Feel free to reach out if you are in need of a structural engineer recommendation.

Best of Luck,
