Stray cats

My neighbor has been feeding stray cats in his backyard, next to me. It was ok for a year but now, it’s become a huge issue. There are more than 6 cats and they are very non friendly and territorial. They would hiss at me when they are on my side of property. They would climb on top of my car and use underneath as sheltered consistently. They would poop everywhere, even my front porch which now reeks of poop whenever I open my front door. Puke and poop scattered at my backyard. Now, I have nothing against cats but this is driving me nuts.

Has anyone been in such situation? I can’t do anything to my neighbor since it’s legal to feed stray cats. Are there any solution to this?

@DIBS, the problem with TNR is that (a) it’s a ton of work and (b) AFAIK, they release them back where they got them, so it is a long term, but not quick, solution. The names you cam up with may assist with TNR, but I doubt they will (or any no kill shelter) will take these cats, which are essentially as wild an animal as raccoons, squirrels, pigeons, etc.

I believe NYC ACC is legally required to take in any animal that comes through its doors. Now what happens to it after it does is another thing. As feral cats I doubt they would be deemed adoptable, and may be put down. They have locations in Brooklyn at Linden Blvd, Manhattan on East 110th and on Staten Island somewhere.

Though I’m totally in favor of TNR it is more work than you think so hopefully you can find a group to do it for you. Also, if you go thru TNR training you have to put up with crazy cat people who are so cat crazy they even made our cat crazy (and I mean CAT CRAZY) friends wince. We hardly got any training in because so many participants were telling kitten stories, we went over time and had to leave bc they needed the room.

AFAIK no cat rescue group will take in adult feral cats, although some will TNR them. Some may take very young feral kittens, who can be socialized.

Are you trolling, randi, or just dense? Feral rats and feral cats pose very different public health risks. Very reasonable to have different laws with respect to each.

Agreed. I can’t imagine my local shelter, which is a wonderful resource with wonderful animals that all need homes, taking in the 5-6 ornery, untamed and undomesticated cats that wreak havoc in my backyard.

Yes, harming the stray cats in any way is a form of cruelty and is illegal in NYC. The bigger issue is there is no program/org that would take the cats for shelter or anything. I also cannot blame my neighbor since he probably feels bad for the cats and don’t see the bigger picture that he is causing.

As long as I can get the cat to stop pooping in my front yard, the other issues I can live with for now. I will try Orange Oil on the soil and coffee grind. The sprinkler sensor is not going to work since I park my car in the back.. I will get sprayed by it =P
