Sticking out a shaker door Cont'd

Previous thread was locked, but I noticed something working on my project. As I’m stripping some doors that having applied sticking on one side, I see that the other side has a slight raised panel like in this picture: [Il_570xN](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s2/:brownstoner:vcRT:il_570xn.1297252927_3i0l.jpg.jpg)

I’m wondering, if I remove the applied sticking, would I find this type of raised panel underneath, or would it be a flat panel like a shaker door as I expected?

The doors were bathroom doors from an old law tenament. I also got some apt doors there which were decorated on both sides. But yes, I have found these doors in brownstones, often in closets or cellars like you suggest, and I plan to use them for closets.

the raised panel is probably on the one side, the side that would face out into the common areas of the house. in some really heavy old doors, when they wanted raised panels on both sides (for look or to make an air pocket for insulation on say a church door), they put two panels in, back to back. and on that second door, they dadod the stiles and rails and built it around the door. probably no sticking. those doors are from the older, often civil war era doors or working class doors up and to the brownstone period. maybe basement doors or doors to pantries, doors house staff had to deal with. i’ve seen them closer to the water where years ago the working classes lived as there were ships and all sorts of smelly operations going on at the water’s edge.

Here is a better picture of the type of door I’m describing. it does seem like the moulding could go over a raised panel making it look flat. [Il_570xN](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s1/:brownstoner:gHXF:il_570xn.1297252927_3i0l.jpg.jpg)
